The Following Notes on Acetates are Adapted from: http://www.moremusic.co.uk/links/features/acetate.htm
Acetates are of interest to the collector because they are the rarest format of all. They also sometimes contain exclusive mixes of songs.
What is an acetate?
An acetate is a transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record. A machine actually cuts the grooves into the acetate like a lathe. This can be computerised, or done manually by the engineer.
The acetate is used to assess whether the music has been successfully transferred to disc. It is checked by the sound engineer. There may be only one copy made of a particular recording, sometimes more are cut and sent to the studio and band members for approval.
The acetate comes before making the master, and allows the sound to be checked without great expense. Sometimes DJs and remixers will get acetates cut in order to have an exclusive mix to play out!
It is unusual for more than a dozen to be manufactured, so from the collector's point of view an acetate is a rare find indeed! If the recording is rejected the acetate may be the only record that survives. The rejected cut may simply be poor quality, however the artist may have opted to use a different take of the song. If so, the acetate becomes much more precious.
Spotting one!
An acetate looks like a vinyl record, but it is actually a metal plate covered in a layer of acetone.
Spotting an acetate, look for the following:
- Usually 1 sided, with no grooves on the reverse
- Heavy!
- Will ring with a metallic sound when tapped
- Has a second, off-centre hole near the middle.
- Labels are typed or handwritten

PRECISION MASTERING: TWO DECADES IN HOLLYWOOD
by Blair Jackson
Dec 1, 1999 12:00 PM
Precision Mastering, based in Hollywood, Calif., is celebrating 20 years as one of the top mastering houses in the industry. Founded in 1979 as Precision Lacquer by Larry Emerine (who had worked as chief engineer at Richard Perry's Studio 55), the facility has seen an incredible array of talent come through its doors, including such "name" acts as Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Alice in Chains, Eurythmics, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Beck, Roy Orbison, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Barenaked Ladies, Rod Stewart, Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Prince, Kiss, Stone Temple Pilots, Janet Jackson, Don Henley, R.E.M. and Barbra Streisand. Like any great studio, Precision has built its reputation with a combination of superior technology and skilled operators for that equipment.

The following is an excerpt from an article on Geffen Records and Gabriel's Album "Passion: Music for The Last Temptatiom of Christ":
Gabriel returned to film in 1988 by scoring Martin Scorsese's controversial The Last Temptation of Christ, with Geffen releasing the soundtrack album Passion, subtitled "Music For The Last Temptation of Christ" (1989). The album won Gabriel a Grammy for Best New Age Recording and a nomination for Best Original Score. Passion was also the first release via Real World Records, launched by Gabriel and WOMAD in 1989 to record and promote a wide range of artists from around the world. His recording facility near Bath, England is also known as Real World Studios. Each year, musicians from across the globe gather there for seven days of creative synergy known as Real World Recording Week.

* A further note about my grading: I rarely grade a previously owned record NM. I do not use this grade unless the record is virtually flawless. After NM, my highest grade is E, followed by VG+. I do not use NM-, E-, VG++, or VG+++ or other so-called in-between grades. VG+ should be very acceptable to most collectors. I will only list a VG record if it is extremely rare and hard-to-find.
