Review: The Phil Woods Quartet/Quintet 20th Anniversary Set'' (7 LPs) is a splendid celebration of this band, whose hallmark has been its consistently winning combination of empathetic ensemble work and soloing prowess from the formidable Woods and his colleagues.
This package of 31 tracks, cut between 1976 to 1992, is especially interesting because none of it has been released before. Here are recordings by a genuine working band that has honed its unified sound over the years and has undergone relatively few personnel changes.
The group has been anchored by its original members, a triple alliance consisting of Woods, drummer Bill Goodwin and bassist Steve Gilmore.
Woods has always had a knack for hiring excellent pianists. Over the years his band has had three: Mike Melillo, Hal Galper and Jim McNeely.
To keep things fresh, Woods has occasionally changed the fifth member in the quintet format. That slot has been held with distinction by guitarist Harry Leahey, trumpeter Tom Harrell, trombonist Hal Crook and trumpeter Brian Lynch.
There are no castoffs here, nothing remastered from old, rotting tapes found in the bottom of a box in some overheated or mildew-infested attic. These areclean-sounding tracks graced with a lot of sophistication and fire, especially the ones pairing Woods with the great Tom Harrell, a trumpeter who some years back appeared often with the Don DePalma Trio at Hartford's 880 Club.
