BRILLIANT LOST SITAR HEAD SWIRLER HERE from none other than P.F. Sloan, "Karma (Study of Divinations)" b/w "I Can't Help But Wonder, Elizabeth", Dunhill D-4106, alternately listed online as being from 1967 and 1969 (and, since Dunhill 4105 was the Grass Roots 1967 single "Wake Up Wake Up", I'm putting my money on 1967). Hard to believe this is the same guy who wrote the early folky Turtles hits and passed on "Eve of Destruction" - "Karma" finds Mr. Sloan without the help of Steve Barri, reverted to his original name of Philip Sloan, and embracing all the mystical "hip" Indian sitar sounds of the times. And since both Del Shannon and Chad & Jeremy were able to produce excellent pop psych albums when popular tastes required it, why not PF Sloan? He does a great job too - this is an excellent floaty dreamscape of Eastern sounds - to quote the song itself, "a sleepy dream" - or to quote King Missile, "mystical s*&t". The opening minute sounds just like Side 2 of the Mandrake Memorial's "Medium" album - all breathy ethereal vocals, trancelike vibe, and faint sitar. Midway through, it explodes into a cosmic shower of electricity when some fine acid guitar leads kick in, ultimately giving way to a barrage of Indian tablas and simmering sitar. "Study of Divinations" indeed - how can anyone STUDY with all this NOISE? A truly cosmic mind-bender of a track, amazingly UNCOMPED, especially when you consider how PERFECT this would be on a volume of Electric Sitar Head Swirlers (certainly moreso than J.A. Caesar). P.F. Sloan channels the spirit of India on this lovely little single - and he didn't even have to spend months with Mia Farrow to do it! Now THAT'S genius!
