Description

*PHILIPS* BLACK SABBATH - BLACK SABBATH 1970 UK 1st VINYL LP VERTIGO G+/G+
I have conservatively rated this album as G+/ G+.
• Matrix / Runout (Side A, stamped, variant 1): V0 6 1Y * 1 420 12 12
• Matrix / Runout (Side B, stamped, variant 1): V0 6 2Y * 1 420 12 4

It plays better than I hoped when I first received it since it is quite scratched (photos cannot really pick all of these up), but this is clearly not a mint example of the record or sleeve but is still a piece of history from one of the great bands.
I have cleaned it with good quality liquid cleaner (from Russ Andrews) and played it through a couple of times from which I found the following:
Side 1
Black Sabbath: regular clicks for around the first half of the track then occasionally afterwards.
The Wizard: an occasional click, otherwise plays well.
Behind the Wall of Sleep: plays well throughout.
N.I.B.: clicks at the beginning of the track and towards the end

Side 2
Evil Woman: plays well
Sleeping Village: plays well
Warning: plays well until near the end when there is a jump which repeats the groove (this is caused by a mark which is visible on the vinyl)
Obviously, this is with the caveat that other systems may be less forgiving than mine but the actual sound of the record when it plays without any noise is pretty impressive for such an old record.

I recently acquired this album through an inheritance and have checked it against the criteria on Discogs for a first pressing, which I have pasted below (please look at this in conjunction with the photos) and the stated matrix numbers above.
First issue released on the ''swirl'' Vertigo label with big logo above spindle hole and the wording ''Vertigo'' below spindle hole and 'A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT' text.
Comes in a gatefold cover and with a ''swirl'' inner bag. The gatefold cover is slightly textured compared to later issues and has different upper-case only credits on inner gatefold.

Vertigo inner sleeve reports: 'MADE IN ENGLAND British Patent No. 800513 & 973939 - PLASTIC BAGS CAN BE DANGEROUS - TO AVOID SUFFOCATION KEEP THOS BAG AWAY FROM BABIES AND CHILDREN'

The first issue (this release) had an erroneous copyright warning stating that “Copyright subsists in all Stereo recordings…”. Subsequent ''swirl'' Vertigo reissues corrected copyright warning to “Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings…”

The first (this release) and 2nd versions had band member and production credits in capital letters throughout. Subsequent ''swirl'' Vertigo reissues changed all credits into upper and lower case and also adds in composition and publishing credits.
All issues released on the ''swirl'' Vertigo misspell Ozzy Osbourne as Ossie Osborne.

If you have any questions please do ask. I would like this record to sell for what it is worth in the condition it is actually in and would not want anyone to be disappointed because it was not like new.
