    L'ASSASSINO

directed by ELIO PETRI,  Italy 1961

An antiquarian in full socio-economic ascent (Marcello Mastroianni) is charged with the murder of his ex-lover (Micheline Presle) with seemingly overwhelming evidence. The Commissioner who investigates her case (Salvo Randone) since the beginning has no doubt: the man is guilty and may be subjected to any treatment provided they confess. The result will be a forced soul-searching that will make clear to the Antiquarian how bleak his life and its environment.

Excellent pair of actors Mastroianni-Randone (62 ' Nastro d'Argento for best supporting actor) dominates a well-constructed plot – authors, Tonino Guerra. Petri focuses first on the distress, then on the discouragement of suspect, which is not granted by the "benefit of the doubt"; every trick, every kind of psychological pressure is granted and eventually also the spectator is forced to doubt about the innocence of the man whose life is being mercilessly revealed minute after minute, through pressing and significant flashbacks. In his ascent to a coveted position of "wellbeing", the Antiquarian had to accept a series of compromises and act so often reprehensible: conned friends buying a few lire antiques sold them sky-high prices, then it is left to seduce by the wife of one of them to gain economic advantages, has deceived his naive and loyal maid to offer it to a customer. Despite having to endure situations of psychological torture, man is a victim of "process" that his past in search of items that justice could use to accuse him, having too many occasions guilty of disgraceful acts. And when the real murderer of his former lover finally confesses, the Antiquarian leaves the prison, apparently shocked by what he saw for the first time observing yourself through the mirror of his conscience fugitive; but will a few days to make disappear any repentance or remorse and the man returns to his squalid existence as well as had lived before the day of the arrest.

Already mature despite being its first Director – had experience as a writer – Petri tackles with unmistakable style themes that would later become central to his cinema, that relationship subject-authority come to an ultimate expression in masterpiece "Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto". The methods of the police are uncivilized, the Commissioner's attitude is perplexing: the citizen-subject is at the mercy of Justice – or better than who should administer – helpless and apparently without rights. There is a certain irony in this story, bitter and unpleasant, which has the merit – as many other narrated by Petri – to be terribly timely.

Standar Titanus cover in EX condition. This record was NEVER PUBLISHED with a photographic cover but only with standard holed cover.

Vinyl :   EX/EX

Side A visually appears to have slightly exuded showing a slight "milky haze" due to contact between original plastic inner sleeve and vinyl during the long years of storage. This visual peculiarity is however  totally uninfluent on the quality of the sound and absolutely not affecting the music (no aural hiss or any background noise). Side B look played with extreme care, with no rubs or marks. Please, listen to my soundclips.

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light.

NM  (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX   (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG  Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-(Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues.

G  Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
