There's a grandiose, finishing credits vibe to the first track on Pinegrove's latest (and first for the legendary Rough Trade label). Solid guitars, melodic vocals and staccato piano riffs mark this out as emotionally-charged garage rock from the off, although don't expect this to be all the perfect soundtrack to a boozy Saturday with friends in your flat. Things become a little more sombre, or at least introverted and self-reflective as the tracks move on. "The Alarmist" sounds like a man having his heart stamped on by crushed dreams and shattered illusions, somehow finding strength to continue until the real gritty chords land. The final chapter, "Marigold" itself, is a whispering, atmospheric thing of staggering beauty that closes us out with a meditative offering. Tracks like "Hairpin" satisfy desires for classic folk traditions - more whisky on the veranda than microbrewery bottles in a Brooklyn apartment.
