Brief Info: Album number 13 and the first without Roger Waters. Keyboardist Rick Wright is listed more as a guest also, but plays a significant role. Many consider it a strong return to form after the downbeat previous album, it again sold well. With the CD format now established, many copies were sold on the digital format, so less abundant on vinyl than previously. This a nice copy that appears little played by the one previous owner. Cover-protected and generally well pressed, but the odd trace of contact sound here and there – it is an album with several very quiet passages and silence on quite a mass-produced album is very difficult to find. More unusually, this cover has a ‘hammered’-style texturing around the border areas of the main graphic which I have seldom seen. This makes it even more vulnerable to wear which it has largely avoided. Finding any version of this cover in such condition is a real challenge, and the recessed inner sleeve is unsplit and immaculate. So overall, a very fine example is a typically challenging Pink Floyd album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. The dark border areas of the main graphic are quite heavily textured with a distinct and unusual finish. The graphic areas are much smoother. This one has the very wide spine. Printed and made in England with the ‘RB8709HP’ code text all seen in close-up. Includes the graphic/lyric card inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Even though quite heavily textured around the dark border areas, this cover has escaped wear due to being cover-protected by the one owner. Any hint of rubbing is minuscule critically under light, and no creasing worthy of note. The deep colour of the artwork is simply outstanding and fresh with no sticker issues. Not seen too many better than this.

Cover Back: Practically the same, the lack of ring wear always great news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate and ultra fresh with barely anything to fault, any ultra faint blemishes under light purely natural. These inner surfaces are the regular smoother finish.

Top Edges: Both thick, straight, flat and flush with no rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar, any rub traces few, fine and light. Storage edges seldom escape this well on dark surface covers.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is immaculate. The back entrance edges are clean, very sharp with barely any thickening, even as seen viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Very wide, robust and in stunning practically mint condition as-seen. Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn with no fading or scuffs. This vulnerable, thick original spine will rarely be found better.

Corners: All corners are again in supreme condition, any rub traces tiny with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very wear-prone 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This elusive textured version will rarely be seen with such little wear or issues and remains one of the very best I have ever seen. It should please most collectors, and this variant with pronounced surface outer texturing could indeed be a major upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined card lyric/graphic inner also in lovely condition. Unrubbed with any creasing very light and small with all edges solidly intact with no repairs. The side entrance has a recess to aid record removal, this area immaculate with no creasing or thickening. Like his other albums, the one owner stored the record inside a replacement soft-lined inner, hence both record and this inner are so fine.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy again appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. So many of these are littered with marks from the unlined inner sleeve, any here are ultra fine, few and faint. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a fresh, clean record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb, later-era Pink Floyd album plays most up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal – but a little contact sound is lightly apparent here-and-there on a revealing system – pressing quality on this album can, and is very variable on what was quite a mass-produced title that was expected to sell in considerable numbers. There are no tracking issues*, but the odd sporadic tick is also near impossible to avoid on another typical prog album with some very quiet passages. For sure, a record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. So a few polite reminders of what is being played, but I deem absolute silence on this and other Pink Floyd and prog albums near impossible. Little of any major note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, but possibly not for the absolute purists who want that near impossible silence which will always be a huge and difficult task. Purely in the pressing, as this record for sure has hardly been used, and certainly never abused or even handled many times. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended for many fans and collectors – just not for perfectionists.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
