Description
This is the very rare first issue stereo press of A Saucerful Of Secrets. It is pressed on the blue/black Columbia label - complete with E.J. Day flipback laminated cover. This is actually one of the first pressings also of the stereo in that the 'bible' of all things Pink Floyd - pinkfloydarchives.com has it as number 3 on their 'matrix listing'.
Cat no SCX 6258 // Matrix numbers YAX 3633 - 1 / YAX 3634 - 1 // Stampers R 1 and R 1
I am quite simply amazed by the clarity of the audio quality. There is a little background noise but for a vinyl of this age it sounds superb. Side One starts with great audio with 'Let There Be More Light' playing with wonderful clarity and no pops/clicks at all. 'Set The Controls...' plays stunningly for such a quiet track. Barely no crackle it sounds great. Indeed there are no pops or clicks at all throughout Side One. There is some distortion during 'Corporal Clegg' but that is very common with the early stereo presses.
Side Two plays extremely well also. The title track does have some crackle during the intro but then settles down to just intermittent background crackle here and there which does not interfere with the sound quality in my opinion. Perhaps a little distortion in places but there are no pops or clicks at all.
You can see 3/4 faint scratches under a bright light on both sides but overall it has been looked after extremely well and for its age it does actually look very clean. A great first stereo press.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
The laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is generally in excellent condition. The only real area of wear is on the bottom opening edge where there is a small tear. The laminate does have a few creases towards the opening edge. The edges and spine are in excellent order with only very slight 'rubbing'. The flipback is very clean with only a few minor creases. The remainder of the back cover is in excellent condition. On the flipback top right is 'File under Popular : Pop Groups' and underneath is the stereo catalogue number SCX 6258. Overall an excellent 'Stereo' cover whilst not perfect is certainly one of the better ones that I have seen.
The original inner sleeve is also included and has the reddish brown printing on cream coloured paper. It is in superb condition for its age with no rips or tears, just very minor creasing. On each side it is advertising 16 LPs including The Beatles Sgt Peppers and also 'Piper' on the reverse.
The black labels are in excellent condition with only minor spindle wear. At the bottom of the label it says "Made in Gt. Britain" and of course it has the famous blue Columbia text. Further proof of it being on the first stereo 'run' is that it has the first known label. 'Let There Be More Light' does not have a publishing credit whereas 'Corporal Clegg' has Magdalene Music credited. This was altered on later runs.
I would grade the vinyl as Ex
The laminated cover is Ex-
The labels are Ex+
The inner sleeve is Near Mint-
