Description
On sale here is a UK first mono pressing of PINK FLOYDS iconic 1968 album entitled "A saucerful of secrets".
This is the UK first pressing with the blue and black Columbia labels and has the very earliest possible mother and stamper combination. Both mothers are "1" and both stampers are "G". Since, generally, only 300-500 pressings were made from each stamper, this makes this album one of the very first to ever be pressed. Suffice to say that sound quality can only deteriorate on later pressings, as the pressing gets further and further from the original master tape source. Not only is this the very earliest mother / stamper combination possible, but also the vinyl is in a most superior cared for condition. The cover is a really fine example for being some 43 years old. The company inner sleeve is also in a lovely condition. The vinyl itself shows very little signs of use and plays through extremely well indeed.
I cannot really stress exactly what a rare item this is. I find it hard to believe that a better VERY earliest first mono pressing is out there anywhere. This one really is too good to miss. So don't!
This is a more detailed description of its parts:-
THE COVER:
Front (and flipback) laminated original Garrod and Lofthouse cover. Has the "also available in stereo" text on the rear top right corner. Dated 6807 (July 1968). No storage wear to top or bottom edges. Spine is perfectly legible and has just a 5mm area of wear. Some light laminate creasing to 2 corners and the usual handful of short creases near the spine. Light disc impression starting to form. The rear is very clean. Flipbacks are complete and fully stuck down. There is no writing of any kind anywhere. The very extremes of the tips of the corners have some very minor colour loss. This is a really great example of this cover and grades a very healthy excellent minus (EX-).
INNER SLEEVE:
EMI company inner sleeve advertising other artists. Although this is not the original, (this is from the very early 70's) it is from a later pressing of the same album. Print is in a maroon colour. An excellent example with no seam damage at all. No creases of note and just a couple of small age spots. Grades as excellent (EX).
LABELS AND VINYL:
Columbia blue and black labels. Has the "Sold in UK subject to price conditions" text and "Gramophone Co Ltd" text around the edge. There appear to be around 10-12 spindle marks per side, indicating very little play for a record of this vintage. No other marks of note to the labels. The vinyl is a beautifully thick piece and without any warping. It retains a full glossy shine and has a deep black lustre. There are no marks that cause any concern. There are some superficial light hairlines to each side, but nothing with any depth. These are simply light surface marks and mostly from taking it out of the paper sleeve, that is all. This disc now sits in an anti static rice paper and polythene inner sleeve. Both labels and vinyl grade a solid excellent minus (EX-).
AUDIO PERFORMANCE:
Played through Linn LP12, Naim amplification and JBL monitor speakers this sounds fantastic! Audio is clean and crisp throughout. Detail and sound staging is top drawer. This is a powerful and sometimes quietly intricate album. A masterclass. There is little to fault here. There is very little noise to note. The very odd light crackle or static here and there. An odd soft dust pop too, but nothing that takes away from, or intrudes into the music. Of course there are no sticks or jumps at all. This is a glorious vinyl and I firmly believe it would be very hard to significantly better. In my view the sound quality grades a solid excellent minus (EX-).
So, a most highly recommended example of the bands 1968 album. These are now highly sought after by Floydies and collectors alike. I can see (and hear) why! The first pressings really are a class apart, particularly the far more rare mono pressings. To find a decent first UK pressing is hard enough. To find one of the first 300 or so to ever have been pressed and in this order is a rare find indeed.
This is a fabulous investment these days and a great Floyd collectors item. Don't miss this one!
