This genuine first pressing has no EMI logos on the labels and comes complete with a very impressive gatefold and the original inner.

Visual grading

This vinyl is in lovely condition and has only a very small number of mega faint hairlines.  At first glance it looks 'as new' and still has a fantastic glossy sheen.  The only negative is one tiny 'blemish' on S1 that I think has been caused by a needle drop.  There is some spindle wear but this is a vinyl that has been very well looked after.

Play grading  

The classic title track 'Atom Heart Mother' begins with great clarity.  So often the opening grooves suffer some marking or scratching but that is not the case here.  Yes there is a little 'hiss' in the background but it is only audible because the music is so quiet.  The first brass section plays with stunning depth and resonance and basically sounds 'as new'.  It continues to play with excellent quality but there is definitely some audible hiss in the quieter sections.  A few minutes in there are about 10 rather loud clicks unfortunately but that is the only obvious interference across the whole track.  Some may find the 'hissing' a little intrusive but the actual audio plays very well indeed.  The remainder plays in similar fashion and the louder sections in particular play with excellent quality.

'If' on S2 has barely any static on the intro and then plays with extremely clear audio throughout.  There is some light 'hiss' again and the odd dust tick but overall this is one of the cleanest versions I have heard for quite a while.  This track often plays with some interference I find but there are no clicks or pops here.  'Summer 68' is of the same standard and.  Some 'hiss' again but the clarity is very impressive.  The choruses and brass/piano sections play with stunning quality and the final two thirds play with Near Mint audio.  A superb version overall.  You can hear the bells very clearly on the 'Fat Old Sun' intro and it also plays with minimal static.  The hiss is very much in the background and there are no clicks or pops.  There is some light static here and there but it is not intrusive and overall this is an excellent version and the end guitar section is superb.  Of course 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays very quietly so I am pleased to say it plays with excellent clarity here.  Some light static here and there as some light crackle on the intro lays very clearly from start to finish.  There is some background static here and there but is very much in the background.  Some ubiquitous light hiss again but I don't think it interferes too much.  The second half is a superb listen and has very little 'background'.  Of course it has the continual drip at the end which will continue if you have a manual turntable.

The Gatefold

The original G&L gatefold is excellent condition and the first thing you notice is how clean it is.  So many are found in poor condition today but this is certainly not one of them!  The edges are in great condition and the spine only has a small area of rubbing and remains 100% legible.  The corners of the spine are very clean but the right hand ones do have a little more wear.  The opening edge has hardly any handling wear.  The front cover itself is beautifully clean with only one tiny 'white' mark top right and the back cover has no marking at all, it is in superb condition.  The inside of the gatefold is in near pristine condition with only some light rubbing bottom left.  As per the first pressings it has '7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse etc' printed in the bottom left corner.  Overall an excellent example.

Inner sleeve

The original poly-lined EMI/Harvest inner sleeve has no splits or tears and has only a little creasing and age related fading.

The labels

The yellow/green Harvest labels have no marking/writing and no EMI logos as per the first pressings.  There is some spindle wear - not a great deal on S1 but there is more on S2.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
