Description
On offer here is one of the very first pressings of Atom Heart Mother in superb condition. Being a first press it has no EMI on the labels and has the matrix numbers A-1G / B-1G. The bible of all things Pink Floyd - pinkfloydarchives.com - has the Mother Stampers H 12 and A 2 as number three on its matrix listing so it doesn't get much earlier!
3) SHVL 781 A-1G H 1 2 / SHVL 781 B-1G A 2 (both stamped)
Visual grading
Visually this first pressing is is in excellent order. Under a strong bright light I can only detect a couple of very faint hairlines on each side and a couple of small marks on Side One and is definitely one of the best I have ever seen and retains that glossy sheen of new vinyl.
Play grading
Side One starts with a little lead in static but only very little I hasten to add! There is a few seconds of distortion also. For a vinyl that is now approaching 50 years old you will expect some interference especially for such an early pressing. It does plays very clearly with a little distortion in the louder sections. The quieter sections (and there are many of them!) play with great audio with only a little interference here and there. If anything the second half of the title track plays even better with very little static and with wonderful depth and clarity. There is a little distortion towards the end but that is maybe more due to my stereo system than anything else.
'If' plays with some crackle at the beginning and a few light clicks but for the remainder plays with very clear audio and great depth with barely any interference. 'Summer '68' is stunning, has wonderful clarity and is one of the best versions I have heard, amazing for a first press! 'Fat Old Sun' has very clear audio also with minimal static. The intro to 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays with very light static also but is very much in the background. The remainder plays fantastically well with very little interference, a great listen! Just a little distortion towards the end. The drip at the end will of course continue endlessly on a manual turntable until the needle is lifted off the record.
Cover
The G & L gatefold is in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear. The edges are superbly clean, there is just a little rubbing at the top and bottom of the opening edge. The spine has some wear although nothing major as can be seen in the photos. The inside of the gatefold is untouched and looks superb. The reverse side has very light 'spotting' on the top left but overall this cover is extremely clean, has been very well looked after and is free of any marks or writing.
Being a first press it has on the inside "7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781" in the lower left hand corner.
Inner sleeve
Also included is the original polylined sleeve advertising various releases including 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Ummagumma'. It is in great condition with no rips tears, just minor creasing.
Labels
The yellow/green labels, with no EMI logo, are in excellent condition with no marks or writing. They do have a little spindle wear.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
