Atom Heart Mother A-1G / B-1G (no EMI logo - first pressing)
This very first pressing is in stunning condition and is one of the best I have ever heard. It of course has no EMI logo on the labels.
SHVL 781 // A-1G / B-1G // MH 1 & AR 2
Side One is Ex for the first 2/3 minutes then is Near Mint
'If' on Side Two is Ex+ , 'Summer '68' and 'Fat Old Sun' Near Mint- and '...Breakfast' is Mint-
The gatefold is Near Mint-
The labels are Ex++
The inner sleeve is Ex
Visual grading
Under a strong bright light it is in superb shape. There are no scratches just a handful of very small faint marks that have no bearing on the stunning audio whatsoever. I can only detect 2/3 faint hairlines - this is one of the cleanest first pressings I have seen in a long time. There is some spindle wear but the vinyl has obviously been very well cared for, as despite being played a number of times, the audio is still absolutely stunning. It retains that lovely glossy sheen as when first purchased.
Play grading
The title track has some light crackle at the beginning but the audio is still strong and vibrant. Thereafter it plays extremely well with just the odd hint of static here and there. In fact the final two thirds of the track has stunning audio and sounds practically as new such is the quality. I have not heard such a good 'Atom Heart Mother' in a long time. For a 46 year old vinyl, and a first press at that, the audio is so clear and free of background noise this ranks with the best. For such an epic track with so many quiet sections it plays exceptionally well. Even the intermittent static during the first 2/3 minutes does not detract from the stunning audio on show here. In fact the more I listen to it the more I am impressed by it! The depth and clarity is quite simply sublime, what a stunning version.
'If' plays with amazing audio again apart from 3/4 clicks and the faintest bit of static here and there. The clarity is once again of top quality. 'Summer '68' has some light 'dust ticks' and plays superbly with great depth. 'Fat Old Sun', and I'm trying not to repeat myself, plays with equal quality with just 2/3 clicks. Astonishingly good audio! For such a quiet track 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' plays with near Mint audio, it is breathtakingly good and is the best I have ever heard. What a fantastic end to a high quality audio LP.
It is worth noting that the drip at the end will of course continue endlessly on a manual turntable until the needle is lifted off the record with these first pressings.
Gatefold cover
This G & L gatefold has been remarkably well preserved down the years and only has minimal wear. The edges and spine are in immaculate condition and only the corners have a tiny bit of shelf wear, and I do mean tiny! The front cover and inside of the gatefold are so clean, a rarity for a first pressing. The back cover just has a little ringwear but that is the only negative. This is definitely one of the best first press gatefolds I have ever seen.
As per the first pressings it has on the inside "7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781" in the lower left hand corner.
Inner sleeve
This includes the original Harvest die-cut inner advertising 'Ummagumma' and 'The Madcap Laughs' amongst others. It remains in excellent condition with only light creasing and one small tear along the top.
Labels
The yellow/green labels, with no EMI logo, are in excellent condition with only a few very faint spots and some spindle wear.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
