First pressing can easily be identified by the label not having any Boxed Emi logo, and the Matrix numbers.

A superb example of this LP. Yes there are many copies available, but not many in this condition, not many first pressings in this condition

The sleeve

Non laminated gatefold sleeve which was prone to terrible wear as most non laminates were. I have seen some shocking examples of this sleeve in the past, and whilst this one is not pristine it is a great sleeve, and has hardly any wear.

Starting with the front surface , there is a tiny dent at the bottom of the cover, which isn't noticeable until you tilt the sleeve at an angle. There some very very light fingermarks, and one tiny paper tear in the top right corner.. Spine is flat and perfectly legible.

The rear surface again just shows some very light shelf wear.

The opening edge is nice and sharp. opening the gatefold, the inner surfaces are as new.

The Labels

Original harvest green labels, and a genuine first press without the EMI boxed logo at 9.0clock

just a couple of light spider lines to indicate the LP has had no more than 4 plays in its lifetime.

You are looking at a fantastic example of this LP

pristine looking vinyl which gleams like new, and has retained all of it's original sheen.

Only under very intense illumination am I able to make out a few light whispy hairlines.

The Lp has clearly been very well cared for

The Sound

The three tests I always run on any LP I list should give the buyer a great insight into the reproduction of the record.

Distortion Test:

Pushing the volume up when playing any LP will tell you a lot about the use the LP has had. For example it will show immediately if the groove has suffered any wear through having been subjected to a worn or damaged stylus, or indeed one that was too heavy and caused wear. many people confuse background noise from scratches, and lines with distortion from groove wear. they are very different, and in my opinion I can put up with the odd bit of crackle or light pop, but the sound of a worn record is unacceptable to me. The loud volume ensures that all this is detected because the vibration of the stylus is more pronounced at higher volumes.

there are many many silent passages on this album, and hardly any loud passages at all. But what is eveident, is that there is no distortion to the sound at all, and I can only summise the record has been played on a deck with the correct tracking weight applied at all times.

Production Test:

Not so much of a test, but a report on the quality of the recording and the clarity of the sound

If you listen to Pink Floyd, then you will know they rarely produce an album that is not perfect in the mix and split. Atom Heart mother is a fabulous example of a great production

Unwanted Noise Test:

This concentrates on the noise in the run in groove, the linking groove between the tracks, background crackle, hisses, and pops. I wont mention jumps or sticking as I wouldn't list a record that did either. This is what you can expect to hear on your system, and along with the distortion test form the basis of my overall sound grading.

joy to listen to. The near silent run in groove, is augmented by a superb listening experience. The many quiet passages are what kills of many copies of this Lp, and most are hard to listen to with the sound of frying bacon, or a bowl of rice crispies.

this one sounds really nice. There are some very light pops on occasions, and the occasional bit of light static, but this is the exception not the rule. fully justifies it's Near mint  minus grade.
