Label/Format: Harvest – first issue with no EMI logo and ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ rim text. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean, fresh and still attractive. A couple of gentle handling marks on side one as seen. Spindle marks are few and mostly light, although the cover has a little wear, this first issue copy appears very modestly played and offers superb sound for most of its entirety.

Rarity: Moderate: first issue copies harder to find, especially with a record that still offers top sound. This is one of the cleanest audio copies I have heard for some time. Most fans and collectors will know how difficult this album is. Much of the music and effects are quiet, only a top pressing and carefully played copy will ever offer the sound fans really want.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Pink Floyd’s most underrated and often under-appreciated work, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ was a very brave experimental piece. Partially written with avant-garde composer, Ron Geesin and produced by Norman Smith and beautifully engineered by Alan Parsons. It featured the first in a series of impressive album covers, designed by the Hipgnosis studio, none of which featured photographs of the band on the front. The album’s first side is taken up with the title track broken down into six segments. Brass, choir, strings and sound effects are used throughout including a high powered motorbike near the beginning which roars from speaker to speaker, also horses and a high-speed train – all interesting for the audiophile listener. But away from effects, the epic track stands alone as a superb piece of work, it remains a favourite of mine within the Floyd catalogue. Less commercial and a little out-there, exactly the sound I preferred from this band. Side two offers four songs, the first three gentle more familiar period pieces. ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’ is pretty strange however – a ‘Full English’ with a difference. A highly challenging record with so many quiet passages, many first issues written-off from less-than-worthy, basic record players of the time. The hugely complex sound and grooves ruined by basic heavy-tracking record players of the 1960s and beyond. Overall, this copy plays superbly – a half-a-dozen, brief light ticks heard on ‘Fat Old Sun’, but little else – few available originals will better this. The lack of irritating crackle and surface noise makes for one of the best examples I have heard in ages – I will rarely buy a copy of this title without being able to hear it first. Knowing this well enough to know many will disappoint. The cover is as uncompromising as the record, and this one has aged a little with quite mild hints of age, a few light marks and edge rubbing. So the cover will fall short for the more discerning collector, but if audio quality is the main concern (as it always should be), this lovely record delivers.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the correct ‘first issue’ text inside ‘7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent no 943,895 SHVL 781’ [as seen in close-up]. Also the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A famous front cover, this one only lightly aged with a little very mild discolouration, a tiny few tone spots with any rubbing mainly light around the edge folds and corner tips. It retains lovely deep colour with no fading or price sticker marks or tears, there is hardly any creasing. So just enough to remind of vintage, and many collectors like them that way. This genuine first issue cover front sets a highly respectable and fine standard.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a little more tone spotting near the right top paler area as seen. The lack of ugly penetrating ringwear is a major plus on this very thin card original. Any rubbing around the rim shape is very gentle, light and faint.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Small bottom corner tip rubbing apart, there is little else to fault. Note the close-up of the imprint text on the bottom left edge. This correctly states: 7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent No. 943.895 SHVL 781. Later printings, which appear almost exactly the same omit parts of this text.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat, these have moderate rubbing, but no splits.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, but with less wear than above, more unusual for the traditional storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or minor burring as seen viewed end-on is little and light also. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The spine has rubbing to the lower fold with most near the bottom as seen. But still solid, straight with minimal compression or tilt. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The positive news is all text is present, strong and unworn or faded. This area rarely escapes without some wear, and overall, it has not fared too badly.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine and some nearer very fine shape retained. No bashes, any dinking evidence minimal.

Cover Summary: A more elusive first-made cover, but with some wear mainly to the edge folds, so not for the more discerning collector. The main face areas are still nicely attractive and the spine text intact, it will please many fans who want a true original.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: again a little aged by the usual darkening of the seam adhesive. Not a great deal else to fault really – the polylining still intact, hardly any creasing and all the edges unsplit with no repairs. .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side one even better. A lovely visual original that is still very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Under bright angled light, any surface marks are fine, quite wispy and very light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, thus sound for the vast majority, is very impressive and clean. Pretty much devoid of that irritating crackle and pressing sounds that blight so many. Unruined by worn stylus, all that incredible sound fidelity intact and crisp. I have rarely, if ever heard a first issue format copy sound better. Yes tiny few very gentle ticks on ‘Fat Old Sun’, but little else noted – this was a genuine pleasure to play grade. Knowing this vintage Pink Floyd album well enough to know the perils it faced around time of issue, this copy excels. I adore this album, but too uncommercial for some – give that me the early albums any time over the more user-friendly later ones. This wonderful band for me were at their absolute best when being more experimental and groundbreaking. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pre-EMI first issue copy plays for most all of its entirety above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. The cover may politely remind of age with some wear, but the record itself offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is typically very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Beautifully produced and engineered, any surface sounds are minimal and faint, hardly anything, bar a tiny few very gentle, brief ticks [already mentioned] – honestly, this record will take a huge amount of beating. At last a first issue copy that does this fantastic album nigh-on maximum justice. Few, if any originals will play ‘silent’, that is an immense task on what is one of the most challenging and difficult Pink Floyd albums. So the odd sporadic click is almost to be expected especially if played on more sensitive equipment. But few – bar the perfectionists, will not be happy with this gorgeous sounding example that has to be the very best pressed original I have heard. Not quite perfect, but still hugely impressive – and I will not state this lightly, it merits strong recommendation, and in terms of audio quality, it could prove a major upgrade for many. And yes, like most all copies I have heard, it has the tap dripping loop at the end of side two.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
