Pink Floyd : The Dark Side Of The Moon A3 / B3 + Posters
This is known as the third stereo pressing and it plays with superb audio on both sides and especially S2! S1 is still very impressive with only very minimal 'background' in a couple of places but there are certainly no loud clicks or pops. A full grading is given below.
The sonic quality on both sides is of a very high standard and is one of the finest A3/B3 pressings I have heard.
The iconic cover is in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear and it comes complete with the original posters but no stickers I'm afraid. The original inner is also very clean.
SHVL 804 // A - 3 / B - 3 // MDT 2 / GTP 2 3
The audio on S1 is Near Mint (Mint- in many sections / T2 Ex- for 5 seconds / T4 & T6 intro Ex+ )
The audio on S2 is Mint- (T2 & T3 Near Mint)
The gatefold is a very strong Ex
The posters are Ex+
The labels are Near Mint-
The inner is Ex
Visual grading
It is clear this vinyl has not been overplayed judging by not only its audio quality but its visual quality too. There are no scratches and whilst I can find a few faint sleeve removal hairlines they have no affect on the audio at all. There is a longer hairline and a couple of small faint scuffs on S2 but again they have no bearing on the stunning playback. The run out grooves are also very clean and the matrix info can clearly be read.
Play grading
The 'heartbeat' intro on 'Speak To Me' is of course so quiet and yet it plays to near perfection with no obvious 'background', the clarity is amazing. It is one of finest intros I have heard in a long time and to think this is an A3/B3 pressing! The 'spoken' section is equally as good and as the volume builds I detected only a couple of barely audible ticks. A stunning Mint- start to this classic album.
The segue into 'Breathe' cannot be faulted and the warmth and depth of the audio is as it was back in '73...I imagine! It continues to play with great clarity although just prior to the first verse there are about five ticks of which only one can be classed as a light click. The vocal then plays with superb precision and the remainder is also nigh on perfect with no obvious 'background'. This is Ex- for five seconds but the rest easily grades as Near Mint if not better.
Again the segue into 'On The Run' could not play any better and the sonic quality thereafter is outstanding! From start to finish this plays with incredible clarity and once more the definition of the audio is so impressive. The 'crash' has no distortion and every 'note' during the 'running man' can be heard so clearly with only a very minimal amount of mega light static. A Near Mint version for sure.
The 'clock' intro on 'Time' has no interference and it proceeds in much the same way. There is a little background static during the opening instrumental section but it is very quiet and non-intrusive. The first verse is flawless and from then on plays to the same 'high end' standard. The iconic guitar solo plays with such power with no distortion on the top end and the final vocal plays to perfection also. I must reiterate just how stunning the clarity and depth of the audio is here! I would grade the intro as Ex+ and the remainder as Mint- it is that good.
'Breathe Reprise' is 'as new' no exaggeration. There is no even a dust tick and Mint is a true reflection of the quality here.
The piano intro on 'The Great Gig In The Sky' is so clean with barely any static and has only a little during the 'spoken' section. Once the 'vocal' begins the power and depth of the audio is exceptional and it continues to play in the same precise way. There is no interference and for once there is no distortion. This 'high octane' section plays with incredible power and the quieter end section also impresses on every level. It's rare to find this section playing with such clarity and I am delighted to say it is as close to perfect as could be. There is just a hint of mega light static in a couple of brief sections but there is nothing that stands out - no ticks, clicks or pops and it ends this classic in fine style. This is Ex+ on the intro and Near Mint for the remainder.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the very first groove 'Money' plays with sublime clarity with no obvious 'background' and the first two verses also play beautifully with no intrusion. A couple of minor ticks only the clarity is superb. The iconic instrumental section, starting with the sax solo, is absolutely stunning! The playback is so strong - every section is 'as new' and this is clearly a record that has not been overplayed. The definition of the audio is fantastic and the the final verse and end section play to the same standard also. I have no hesitation in grading this classic as Mint- it is a superb start to the side.
'Us And Them' has only very minimal static on the intro for a few seconds - it is quiet and again non-intrusive. Once the percussion comes in there is barely any static and the opening verse is so impressive with no interference to be heard. The first chorus is immaculate and from then on it plays to the same 'high end' standard with only one light tick. This is an outstanding version - the instrumental sections play with such depth and and there is no intrusion on the vocal sections either. The static on the intro is so quiet I am confident in grading the entire track as Near Mint as there is no obvious intrusion whatsoever.
'Any Colour You Like' then plays to a sublime standard with no ticks, clicks or pops. Just a minor hint of light static on 3/4 guitar notes in the middle section but certainly not intrusive. Perhaps I am being too harsh in even mentioning it but I always write what I hear however minor! I am a 100% honest seller! The remainder plays faultlessly and Near Mint is fair although again the majority is of a higher standard.
The opening grooves on 'Brain Damage' play with stunning quality and the first two verses also play with great precision, just a couple of minor dust ticks. As the volume increases the sonic quality is immense! The chorus is flawless and for once there is no distortion which is a genuine rarity! It continues to play with incredible clarity and power and Mint- is more than deserved. What a version!
'Eclipse' ends the side with wonderful definition...again. The complete lack of distortion is a real surprise and there is no interference at all. Great power and even the super quiet 'heartbeat' ending has only a couple of minor ticks. A fabulous Mint- finish to this classic album.
In summary this very early A3/B3 pressing plays with wonderful clarity and definition on both sides and with barely any intrusion. There is only minimal 'background' on S1 but it's fair to say the vast majority of this side plays with great quality. S2 is stunning! This is a very clean vinyl and the depth and warmth of the audio is very impressive indeed. Together with a superb cover this would please any avid collector!
The Gatefold
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear and is certainly one of the better ones that you find today. The edges are super clean with barely any rubbing and the spine is in fantastic condition and for once has no wear on the corners. The right hand corners also have hardly any wear and the opening edge is as close to perfect as is possible. The front cover is extremely clean with no real marking and only a couple of very faint scratch lines and some minor specks. As can be seen it still has the original sticker top right. The back cover is also very clean apart from a 'line' down the centre which may have been caused by some water dripping down it perhaps. The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition with only a couple of smaller faint water 'lines'. A fine example overall.
The Posters
The original posters are in excellent condition with only some mottling on the reverse side.
The Inner Sleeve
The die-cut plain white inner has no marking or side splits and only a little creasing here and there. It has 'Patent No. 1,125,555' and 'Made in England' printed on one side.
The Labels
They are in great condition with barely any spindle wear and only a minimal amount of very faint mottling on each side which you can only see when the record is held at a certain angle.
