The band's most successful release, The Dark Side of the Moon spent 741 consecutive weeks (14 years) on the USA-based Billboard 200 album chart, the longest duration of ANY album in history. Additionally, the album holds the record of spending the highest amount of time on the Billboard charts, staying there for more than 1,500 weeks (that’s almost 29 years). It is one of three albums tied for the claim of second highest selling album globally of all time, selling over forty million or more units. In addition to its commercial success, The Dark Side of the Moon is often considered to be the group's defining work, and is still frequently ranked by music critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time.

Sales of the album worldwide total over forty million as of 2004, with an average of 8,000 copies sold per week and a total of 400,000 in the year of 2002 — making it the 200th best-selling album of that year nearly three decades after its initial release.

A Fantastic pressing of what is undoubtedly one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Brilliant! - TOP AUDIO on this rare pressing. Dark Side Of The Moon is a musical masterpiece and is also famously a very sensitive piece of vinyl. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like ‘On The Run’. I am a huge fan of DSOTM, and also highly critical of the audio performance. I just cant stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound. Plays with virtually no background static and the audio flaw is immaculate.

I am pleased to say that this rare pressing plays through with great, very bright un disturbed audio. It really is a tremendous example. Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks. The channels are clean and unstressed and there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on the record. There is barely any light occasional static or light static tics, and certainly nothing prominent or repetitive or really that noticeable. The audio plays through with brilliant strong and clear sound, it is a stunning listen. I will give a detailed account below:

This great sounding record starts with surprisingly little static in that famous extremely long run in heart beat intro to 'Speak to Me'. Great clear sound, the track plays superbly with barely any detectable static at all, or even a static tic (the kind found on all vinyls) and not a single light pop anywhere on either side.

'Breathe', another delicate track also sounds fantastically clear and the whole of the fist side really plays with superbly clear audio throughout. 'On the Run', so often heavily distorted and affected by clicks and hiss plays through with amazing clarity and bright loud sound.  Barely any detectable static at all, and no pops or tics.

'Time' sounds great with super clear sound, no pops of clicks and barely any noticeable static. This track just sounds amazing, it's so bright and clear, and so is 'Breathe (reprise)' which is such a delicate down track and very hard to find with even half way clear sound. Here it's just brilliant.

Even the stunning 'Great Gig in The Sky', such a difficult track to find with clear sound, plays superbly. Virtually no detectable light static during the outro, the sound quality is in Mint condition. This is a simply incredible DSOM pressing!

'Money' kicks in side 2. with amazing clear, largely flawless audio. It plays with an amazing bassy, 'sonic' feel, the original sound that is very hard to find, and lost on most pressings.

'Us and them' starts amazingly clear with a tiny bit of light static only and a couple of random static tics. This slight static is low level, very infrequent, and very light, the kind you will find on all vinyl. This track is nearly always plagued by loud pops, clicks, static and even distortion, and this press has none of these, it just sounds superbly clean and bright. Any background static I have to insist is far in the background, and in no way dominates or interferes with the music. You have to get up close to the speakers to hear it. Then it's gone and the sound is great.

'Any Colour you Like' sounds superb, great clear sound. No detectable static, no pops or clicks.

'Brain Damage' sounds superb, bright clear sound leading to the albums climax, with a great pressing of 'Eclipse', with plays superbly, with brilliant clear audio. No pops or clicks or interference at all. Just great clear sound.

The record plays with staggering power, great audio with minimal interference to distract from the enjoyment of this great record. There is hardly even any surface or static noise between the tracks. Even at the end of 'Time' and the run in to the 'Great Gig In the Sky', it is clean, crisp and rich.

The music jumps out, with incredible definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power. As is the same with the bass and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. This lp plays with superb, clear bright audio. I have given  a detailed account and l believe I have been unforgiving in pointing out the slightest audio interference on what is a tremendous rare early pressing.

I would give an overall audio grading a very strict grading of NEAR MINT to MINT!

THE RECORD – Visual Grading

A stunning piece of glossy vinyl, this rare second pressing is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves.  A really wonderful example, it looks unplayed and unmarked. A really great example.

Graded at NEAR MINT to MINT!

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

A lovely set of labels with barely a single spindle trace. These are a great pair of labels with no slight age spots or fading. A really wonderful example!

Graded at  NEAR MINT!

THE COVER

A small batch of the 2nd pressings of Pink Floyd's masterpiece came with a Matt Black cover and a white poly lined inner sleeve with MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN printed on the lower right hand corner. These are incredibly rare and virtually never come up for sale, and are near impossible to find in great condition.

The Matt finish covers of  DSOM  have to be one of the most prone to wear, of all the classic vinyls from the sixties and early seventies. With a black tint and matt finish and not having the advantage of being laminated, these covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and scuffed. Not this one!

This press comes with its original Matt Black Cover. These are just so hard to find with out heavily worn edges, corners and surfaces, as well as serious ring wear.

This is a great example and has very little scuffing to the corners or rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for any pressing of DSOM, let alone an original A3 press. The opening edges are very square and totally un frayed, with virtually no detectable ring wear. The back cover is nice and clean, again with little ring wear, which is very unusual for these delicate covers.

The inside Gatefold is clean and virtually unmarked. The Spine shows no only, and is a nice square example.  All round, this is a great example! A really wonderful example.

Graded at EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS.

The album was originally released in a gatefold LP sleeve designed by Hipgnosis and George Hardie, and bore Hardie's iconic dispersive prism on the cover.

The Cover design was aimed to represent three elements; the band's stage lighting, the album lyrics, and Richard Wright's request for a "simple and bold" design. A spectrum of light moves through to the gatefold sleeve — an idea that Waters came up with.  Added shortly afterwards, the gatefold design also includes a visual representation of the heartbeat sound used throughout the album, and the back of the album cover.

The light band emanating from the prism on the album cover has six colours, missing indigo compared to the traditional division of the spectrum into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The concept was continued with two posters and a sheet of pyramid-themed stickers. One poster bore pictures of the band in concert, overlaid with scattered letters to form PINK FLOYD, and the other an infrared photograph of the Great Pyramids of Giza, created by Powell and Thorgerson.

In 2003 VH1 declared that The Dark Side of the Moon had the 4th-greatest album cover of all time,  and in 2009 listeners of the UK radio station Planet Rock voted the packaging the greatest album cover of all time.

THE INNER

A small batch of the 2nd pressings of Pink Floyd's masterpiece came with a Matt Black cover and a white poly lined inner sleeve with MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN printed on the lower right hand corner. The inner sleeve has flipped backs, for that over onto one side, and a slightly domed top, following the format of the first pressing black inner sleeves.

These are incredibly rare and virtually never come up for sale, and are near impossible to find in great condition.

The original white poly lined inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits. Crisp and clean the top edges and completely un worn. These are so rare now in any type of condition, and this is a great example.

POSTERS

This rare pressing of Dark Side of the Moon comes with BOTH original posters, in great condition.

No tears or stains. Nice crisp edges. NO tape marks or pin holes! A really wonderful set.

Graded at NEAR MINT!

STICKERS

Two original Fasprint CRACKBACK stickers, in great condition. No tears. Nice crisp edges. No tape marks or pin holes. The stickers will come in a separate envelope to ensure that they do not get bent or damaged.

Graded at EXCELLENT.

The Dark Side of the Moon is the sixth studio album by Pink Floyd. The album was developed as part of a forthcoming tour of live performances, and premièred several months before studio recording began. The new material was further refined during the tour, and was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at Abbey Road Studios in London. Pink Floyd used some of the most advanced recording techniques of the time, including multitrack recording and tape loops. Analogue synthesisers were given prominence in several tracks, and a series of recorded interviews with staff and band personnel provided the source material for a range of philosophical quotations used throughout.

The Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate success, topping the Billboard 200 for one week. It subsequently remained in the charts for 741 weeks (fourteen years), longer than any other album in history. With an estimated 45 million units sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has twice been re-mastered and re-released, and has been covered by several other acts.

The Dark Side of the Moon is one of Pink Floyd's most popular albums for fans and critics alike, and is ranked as one of the greatest vinyl albums of all time.

RARITY

Dark Side has been re produced in massive quantities, being one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century. On saying that, finding an original UK early press in great condition is extremely rare indeed.

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a brilliant example. Finding a great cover like this, with a barely played piece of vinyl, rare white inner sleeve and all the original and correct inserts, fantastic!.

A DSOM pressing in this type of condition is very scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any DSOM examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays practically perfectly, very rare. An ORIGINAL pressing, with ORIGINAL Cover, original inner sleeve and ORIGINAL posters and stickers, all in great condition, makes this very rare indeed!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.

.

IMAGES and INFORMATION

We only use photographs of the item for sale taken with professional digital cameras. The images are designed to be as clear as possible, giving an exact representation of the item.
