What is an MFSL pressing?
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has been the undisputed pioneer and leader in audiophile recordings since the company's inception in 1977. Established by dedicated audiophiles, Mobile Fidelity's first and foremost goal was to offer faithfully reproduced high fidelity recordings that would compliment the numerous advances occurring in audio delivery systems.

Throughout its history, Mobile Fidelity has remained true to this goal, pioneering state-of-the-art technologies and setting audiophile standards that remain in place today.

**CONDITION: This is NOT a high grade collector's quality LP. FYI, we grade conservatively to ensure that you are more than happy when you receive your album. Please view the photos carefully prior to bidding!

COVER: VG+
The album cover shows moderate wear on both the front and back. As you can see, the white base color under the black ink is showing throughout the black areas of the cover. This is easy to see in the very last photo! The cover seams and spine are 100% intact with no splitting. Please view the photos carefully prior to bidding!

VINYL: VG
Has the shine and luster you'd expect. However, the vinyl has a significant number of scratches on both sides. The white labels with black print are essentially MINT!

Alongside the company’s launch in 1977 came the half-speed mastered Original Master Recording™ LP. As part of the company's resolve to provide the most accurate sonic reproductions possible, all Mobile Fidelity product is mastered directly from the original master tape as opposed to production copies often used for mass reproduction.

This ensures a more complete and exacting transfer of the original musical data. In the case of the Original Master Recording™ (OMR) LP, the use of the master tape is combined with a unique procedure known as "half-speed" mastering, which literally slows down the cutting system involved in mastering vinyl so that musical information can be transferred from the source tape to the lacquer with greater precision.

To this advanced mastering technique, Mobile Fidelity adds substantial refinements in the vinyl compound itself and improves methods of plating the lacquer.   The result is a playback of phenomenal quality, which is still a benchmark for modern audiophile labels today.

"PINK FLOYD's Dark Side of the Moon" was to become the benchmark phonograph for the audiophile LP industry for years to come. The response was astounding as sales exceeded all expectations. Mobile Fidelity was now at the helm of a newly emerging market for audiophile recordings featuring popular music.

Rarity:
According to Gregg Schnitzer, the Director of Product Development at MFSL from 1980 through 1986, and Chief Engineer from 1984 to 1986, the total production run for Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl was only 25,000.

Record Production Process:
The MFSL Original Master Recording record production process began with the use of the original stereo master tape. Herbert A. Belkin, who had worked for Capitol Records and ABC Records before becoming President of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, originally worked for MFSL as a consultant and helped MFSL gain access to the original master tape for Dark Side of the Moon in 1978.

Using the original master tape, MFSL cut a disc lacquer. This was done on a disc cutter turntable, which was driven by a quartz-lock motor that rotated the turntable at 16 2/3 rpm, one half the speed an LP plays at (33 1/3 rpm), while the master tape was played at one-half the actual recorded speed. This half-speed disc cutting process allowed the cutting stylus twice as much time to carve an accurate groove in the disc.

Although half-speed cutting uses only one quarter of the power needed for normal speed cutting, two 600 watt per channel cutting head amplifiers were used, producing significantly better top end and overall frequency response. No transformers, limiting, or compression were used during the process.

Immediately after the metal lacquer was cut, it was refrigerated for protection. For the plating process, the metal lacquer was sent to Japan where the metal master (negative), and the mother stamper (positive) were created by the Victor Company of Japan (JVC) for MFSL.

A test pressing was then made for approval by the MFSL production department. After their approval, the vinyl records were stamped. The system used for cutting the albums was made by Ortofon, and used 17 op amps in series with the gain path.
