'THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN'
On the COLUMBIA RECORDS Original lable cat# SX 6157 from 1967 in MONO.
Matrixes end '2'(on Side 1) and '1' (on Side 2)
No mistake - it's THE Pink Floyd, with their first incarnation line-up including the enigmatic legend SYD BARRETT. Featuring some wonderful tracks as they played at the UFO CLUB, where they were the first resident band playing several shows there in front of dripping psychedelic oil-lamp lighting (for the benefit of the drug-influenced audiences, but also rather visual if they weren't!). Those Carnaby Street days saw some wild side-effects, and Joe Boyd's creative
London underground club spawned many of them musically. It was suddenly THE place to be and be seen, so when 'The 24 Hour Technicolor Dream' show came up, The BEATLES were also interested enought to attend Alexandra Palace in Wood Green area and witness this 'hip' hippy happening.
De rigour was the paisley satin Kimono style jackets, boas and frilled shirts, and an imagination to match the outrageous sounds.
The Pink Floyd were seen as leaders of this movement, and perhaps their hit singles were confusing for the less mainstream success-disdaining student of that era. Syd Barrett particularly became lauded as an icon though, and maybe he was taken up by that - enough to feel need to be as far 'out there' on halucinagenics as he could. Syd's house-mate was rumoured to be dropping LSD acid tabs in his coffee every morning for months - which can't have furthered the cause regarding mental ability and stability to function in society..... so thus he completely dropped out and away even from his own band.
THIS LP stands as proof of his crazy immaginative genius - not copying Beatles or Mods or R'n B Beat-merchants but doing totally his own thing. It's great, and it's clearly innovative music.
This is the MONO issue,
The Vinyl is visually EX+/VG+. The shine is really great, almost pristine, except;
There's some hiss particularly on the intro, and for some way into each side - diminishing gradually as the needle gets further into the LP - whereupon the sound is vivid and practically NM in quality. There is one superficial line on side 1, and 4 such light scuff-lines on side 2. These do not sound. However, the intro to 'Interstellar Overdrive' has a couple of skips. These may be easily fixed or may not occur on some decks, but may need attention.
The Lables grade EX, BLUE COLUMBIA Original lables.
The laminated Cover grades VG++, with slight general wear and some creasing in a couple of spots.
It's firm and flat though, so - a respectable example.
