Description
THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN 1/2 (early stereo pressing)
On offer here is an excellent early stereo pressing of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. In excellent condition this particular pressing was not issued with a flipback cover. In saying that the actual cover is in superb shape, probably the best I have seen. A comprehensive grading is given below.
SCX 6157 // YAX 3419 - 1 / YAX 3420 - 2 // Mother stampers GDG 3 & R 1
Visual grading
For its age this vinyl is in wonderful order and is remarkably clean. There are a few faint hairlines and whilst there is a fair degree of spindle wear on the labels it is obvious that this record has been exceptionally well looked after in its near 50 years of existence. It is rare to find a 1/2 pressing in such condition when you consider these records were played to death in the late 60s in smoke and drug filled rooms! I would say visually it is in stunning condition and it also lies perfectly flat on the turntable.
Play grading There is some crackle at the beginning of 'Astronomy Domine' which soon decreases and then plays with very clean audio with only the lightest of intermittent static. Excellent depth of sound and no pops, clicks or jumps. 'Lucifer Sam' again plays extremely well but with a little distortion, very common as any Floyd aficionado knows. The remainder of the side plays to the same standard and really for its age is a superb listen. There is barely any interference between the tracks such is the quality. 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk' plays with some distortion again but again there are no clicks or jumps.
Without labouring the point 'Interstellar Overdrive' plays with a little distortion again although still plays with very clear audio and very little other background noise, just some light static here and there. 'The Gnome' follows with great audio and just the lightest of static but not intrusive in any way. The final three tracks play equally as well with a little more distortion on 'Chapter 24'. A fantastic rendition of 'The Scarecrow' however, stunning audio. This is definitely one of the best versions of 'Bike' I have heard also.
Overall the audio on this rare classic LP is of excellent quality and the only downside is the light distortion but, I reiterate, you do expect that with a vinyl of this age. There is very little background noise on this vinyl and for it to play without any clicks or jumps is very rare for a vinyl almost half a century old!
Cover
Again the G & L glossy cover belies its age and is in overall wonderful condition. The edges and thin pinched spine are in superb condition with no shelf wear at all, stunning! The opening edge has minor pinching at the top and bottom but has very little handling wear which is very rare. I would say front cover visually is stunning and the white back cover matches it. There is just a hint of ringwear but there are no marks to be seen. For an early pressing this has to be the best cover I have ever seen, it has been superbly well cared for.
Labels
The black Columbia labels with silver text are in excellent condition with only the spindle wear as already stated. The text around the edge from 8 o'clock reads - "EMI Records, Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited. Made in GT Britain"
Inner sleeve
This LP was issued with a white die-cut inner sleeve with 'Made in Great Britain' on one side. It is in excellent condition with no splits or tears just some light creasing. Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system
