Description
Welcome to my auction of a vinyl copy of Pink Floyd's "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn". I am not a dealer, I just collect records and from time to time I 'thin out' my collection and sell one or two.
This is an original stereo copy of this iconic album, - Matrix numbers are 'YAX 3419-1 RO' and 'YAX 3420-1 RT' with the Mother number 2, all of which indicates that this is a relatively early pressing. - The label is the black Columbia label with silver text, white EMI logo in small rectangle at the bottom and another one at the top. - The text around the top edge starts at 8 o'clock and says "The Gramophone Co Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting and copying of this record prohibited" - The text around the bottom edge of the label starts at 6 o'clock and says "MADE IN GT BRITAIN".".
This is Pink Floyd's first album and was when the line up included Syd Barrett on Lead Guitar and Vocals. Syd also wrote or co-wrote all of the songs apart from one. The album took it's name from Chapter 7 of 'The Wind in the Willows' where Rat and Mole go searching for a missing child. They are drawn to some beautiful music played by a mythical creature who had protected the child and summoned the two friends with his musical pipe at dawn. The tracks on the album itself contain no references to this episode but do contain some of Pink Floyd's most famous tracks, including Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive, to name just two. Before the end of Pink Floyd's second album, Syd had been replaced in the band by Dave Gilmour.
Now for the important bit, what does it sound like? Answer: Fantastic! I have cleaned this record twice (using my Loricraft PRC4 record cleaning machine) and play checked it twice. It does sound absolutely amazing. It is a classic psychedelic album and the stereo effects make it only more so. The cleaning of a record will not take out surface marks though and there are some minor clicks in the run in grooves on both sides of this record where the stylus has been lowered over the years and there is the odd crackle in between some tracks elsewhere but none to worry about. Also there is a slight scratch on the second side during part of the track called 'The Scarecrow'. However there are only a few clicks during the track itself and it becomes only really noticeable in the gap between that track and the final one, called 'Bike'. It does not affect the final track at all. I therefore grade this record conservatively as 'VG' (using the Record Collector's grading system). The only thing stopping me grading it as 'Excellent' are the few pops and crackles as described above. Please see my pictures to see how good this record looks. I rate the cover as 'Excellent'. There are no tears and only a few creases. Again, please see my pictures.
Please note that after cleaning I have put the record into a NAGAOKA Anti-static record sleeve but the original white inner is included in this sale as well.
All in all, this is a wonderful copy of an iconic album. It is one of the greatest psychedelic albums ever. Q magazine rated it as 'indispensable' and it was voted by Q magazine as 55 in the list of best 100 British albums ever released.
Please check out my photos and best of luck with your bidding!
