Description

Pink Floyd : Ummagumma A1/B2/A1/B2 1st Press
This is a stunning first press and for the vast majority the audio plays to an immaculate standard.  It is only S2 that has a little interference but even then it is kept to a minimum.  The clarity and definition overall is very impressive and this is largely due to the fact that the vinyls have hardly been played and have been so well preserved down the years.  Visually they are in superb condition also.
As this is a genuine first pressing there is no EMI logos on the labels and has 'Gand' on the S4 label.  The gatefold has London incorrectly spelled as Londen on the back cover also.  Incidentally this cover is a fine example of its type and has only very minimal wear.  A genuine rarity!  The EMI die-cut inners are also in excellent condition.
SHDW 1/2 // A - 1G / B - 2 / A - 1 / B - 2 // GM 2 / GM 1 / GD 1 / RA 1
The audio on S1 is Mint(-)
The audio on S2 is Ex+ (T1 Near Mint but G+ for 3 seconds)
The audio on S3 is Mint(-)  (Part 1 of T1 Ex+ / T3 Near Mint)
The audio on S4 is Mint(-)
The laminated gatefold is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint
The inner sleeves are Ex+
Visual grading
The vinyls are in lovely condition and both retain a very strong glossy sheen.  It is patently obvious judging by the visual and audio quality that they have only been lightly played over the last 51 years.  There is only minimal spindle wear also which backs up this theory.  They really are in great condition!  There are no scratches and only a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines.  There is one very small 'speck' mark on S2 but this is the only obvious imperfection across all four sides.  The labels and run out grooves are also in superb condition.  This is easily one of the finest first pressings I have seen in many a year.
Play grading
Having played S1 in its entirety I can safely say the audio is STUNNING!  The quiet intro on 'Astronomy Domine' is a sign of things to come and has no 'background' at all.  There is just one very light tick just after the vocal begins but from then on it plays with incredible clarity.  There is no distortion on the top end and it is so obvious this record has hardly been played - there is no groove wear and the definition of the audio could not not be any better.  The long quiet mid section is of the same immaculate standard, just a small number of barely audible dust ticks, and the closing section is has no interference either.  This truly is a superb version that more than deserves a Mint- grade in my opinion.
The super quiet intro on 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' is just incredible!  There is not even a dust tick and it continues to play with a clarity and depth that is so rare to find on these genuine first pressings.  As the volume increases there is again no distortion and I cannot put into words just how impressive this audio is!  'As new' is one way of describing it and the quieter end section also plays with breathtaking clarity.  There is just one light tick before the end but aside from that - pure audio perfection!  There is no underlying static and Mint- is an honest assessment of the audio.  What a side!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' on S2 begins perfectly with no intrusion and proceeds to in the same precise way.  This very quiet opening section plays beautifully with only one light tick and a small number of dust ticks that you find on new vinyls let alone one of this age!  As the volume build the audio is 'as new' and as as the next quieter section starts there are three consecutive clicks but this is the first interference on the album!  From then it plays very clearly with only one minor static tick.  In fact the remainder of this 'live' track is stunning with no 'background' of any kind.  I would grade this as Near Mint and G+ for just three seconds.
The super quiet intro on 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' is superb and has only 2/3 seconds of mega light static plus one static click after two minutes or so.  The long percussive section plays with stunning precision and it is only as it ends that you can hear about ten light ticks.  However, from that point on the audio can hardly be faulted.  The clarity is again sensational and the entire organ 'recital' has only a couple of very light ticks and no underlying static at all.  As the volume increases I heard one very brief 'hiss' sound and as the 'vocal' comes in the audio is stunning to say the least.  No distortion, no 'background' and to the end it plays with sublime quality.  This is difficult to grade as the majority does play so well but yes there is a little interference.  I think Ex+ is fair.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1 of 'Sysyphus' has just one light static click on the intro and one click during the piano section but otherwise plays with great quality.  Ex+ overall.  Part 2 is Mint as there is literally no interference, not even a dust tick, and Part 3 is Mint- which is very impressive when you consider how quiet it is.  It has only a minimal touch of barely audible static.  Part 4 ends this instrumental 'track' with Mint- audio once again, the playback is absolutely stunning.
The quiet intro on 'Grantchester Meadows' is nigh on perfect with only one faint tick and it continues to play with incredible clarity into the vocal section.  Every note can be heard so clearly (including the birdsong!) and this is a remarkable version for over 50+ years.  There is no underlying static whatsoever.  STUNNING!  And perhaps even Mint- isn't doing it justice.
'Several Species...' has just one light click on the intro but aside from that plays with impeccable quality.  Again it's the total lack of static that really makes this vinyl stand out.  A Near Mint version to end the side.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This may well be the finest version of 'The Narrow Way' that I have ever heard.  Part 1 is Mint with no intrusion on the audio and it sounds like it was pressed only yesterday!  Part 2 just has one faint tick but otherwise plays with perfect clarity and Part 3 has a sonic quality that is exceptional to say the least and the only 'background' is one tick in the middle section.  I cannot overstate how well it plays!  Mint-
'The Grand Vizier's Garden Party' has only a couple of seconds of minor static on the intro and the clarity from that point on?  Absolutely stunning!  There are so many quiet sections and yet the playback for a vinyl over 50 years of age is breathtaking!  This all points to a record that has hardly been played, can't imagine why!  I cannot put into words just how stunning the clarity is here.  Aside from a couple of minor ticks this is audio of the highest quality and right to the final note the playback does not disappoint.  A Mint- finish to the esoteric album :-)
In summary this genuine first pressing is of a standard that you rarely find today.  The clarity and definition of the audio across all four sides is so good and it's only S2 that has a little interference but it certainly does not last long!  These first pressings are actually quite hard to come by and especially with audio as 'clean' as this and for once the gatefold is also very impressive.
The Gatefold
This is a superb example of this E.J. Day cover and it has only very minimal wear, you won't find many better!  Being a genuine first press cover it has the incorrect spelling of Londen on the back cover.  Incredibly the edges have no rubbing and the wide spine is stunning, it has only minor corner wear.  The other corners are also in great shape with barely any wear.  The opening edges have only a little handling wear/crimping.  The laminated front cover is in fantastic condition with no marking or creasing and the back cover is almost as good with just one minor corner crease top right and a couple of very small laminate creases.  The inside is immaculate with no marking of any kind.  A fine example overall.
The Inner Sleeves
I'm not entirely sure these are the original inners but they are old nonetheless!  They are of the EMI Important Notice type and have no side splits or marking and only a little creasing.
The Labels
The yellow/green Harvest labels are in superb condition with only very minimal spindle wear.  They have lost none of their original colour and have no marking or writing on them.  Stunning!
