Artist or Band: PINK FLOYD
Album Title: Wish You Were Here.
Producer(s): Pink Floyd.
A Special Note About This Album & Copy: Of all the classic titles I offer and get asked about, few get close to ‘Wish You Were Here’. I get regular Emails asking me if I have a ‘perfect’ playing copy from frustrated vinyl collectors who simply cannot find a clean playing copy of this most wanted title. Well I usually have to say no, and they are truly very difficult to find as most have surface sounds, crackle, pops and clicks and sometimes even pressing sounds and distortion. Even from new the UK copies were to say the least ‘variable’. It is very clear to me where the problem lies: few things in life are guaranteed, but the anticipation for the follow-up to the massive selling ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ was immense, this WAS a guaranteed big seller. Hence this album was ‘mass produced’ quickly to meet demand and pressing quality suffered (not the production however), this record has incredible genuine high fidelity sound values but is often ruined by pressing quality. The title is common enough to find, but only a small percentage will ever play to quietness levels the audiophile listener and connoisseur wants. The higher-end systems ruthlessly reveal flaws and unwanted sounds and I rarely find copies suitable for offering (and it’s not for the want of trying). If they don’t please me, they are not good enough for others – that simple – I will NOT offer inferior of less than wonderful examples. Quite honestly, I it bothers me not one iota, if this is a very first, second or whatever pressing this, as long as it’s early and it plays well. When I saw this copy with near full coverage of it’s original shinkwrap still attached (which is very rare as most all removed it to reveal the proper cover), I had to show an interest. Not only that, the black wrapping is the neatest and shiniest, best preserved I have yet seen. This has been neatly opened to access the record, any cover white that shows is due to the natural shrinkage of this somewhat unstable wrapping. The record looks immaculate and I am truly struggling to find a single spindle mark, how unusual is that for one of rock’s most popular albums? My play-grade, always a nervous time, revealed one of the quietest all-round UK early-pressed examples I have heard in some considerable time. Yes it actually plays with barely any traces of unwanted sounds at all. Life if never perfect, and there are a tiny few, ultra gentle low-level ticks for the briefest time near the start of the title song, but this is pretty much the only blemish on the entire album. This is as close to a near perfect pressing as they get. A super-clean issue, no crackle, no pops or substantial clicks at all. The tiny few present are close to ear-against-speaker gentle and it offers the most phenominal sound that truly does this classic album justice – at long last. Not only is the overall pressing of way above ‘average’ standard, the black shinkwrap has the large sticker still attached, also in superb condition (as seen in close-up), a super-clean inner (original format with wide top opening) and the rarer wavy-edged postcard, many are smooth-cut. These come along all-too rarely now and what a joy to hear this stunning, landmark album this clean. Just to put this into context: when I put the stylus on this record’s beginning, I truly thought I had forgotten to put up the volume control as I could hear no crackle on the near impossibly quiet introduction, the tiny few gentle ticks apart, this is almost as good as they ever get – these disppeared fast. One in many hundreds or even thousands will play this clean, especially after being subjected to countless plays as most were. All collectors have heard a typical and average pressing of this record, crackle, pop, crackle, crackle, pop…, and this on what appears an almost mint looking record. It’s so irritating and frustrating, no surprise why I (and I guess other sellers) get asked so often for a ‘clean player’ with collectors owning several copies, often graded to the highest levels, and ruined by unwanted sounds. This one is way better than a good player, it’s superb, the minor and very brief low level ticks aside at the beginning that last merely a few second, this is probably as good as they ever get, and the original shrinkwrapping on the cover, is near unbeatable.
TRACK LIST:
Side 1: a) Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 1–5; b) Welcome to the Machine.
Side 2: a) Have a Cigar; b) Wish You Were Here; c) Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 6–9.
Label/Format: Harvest - customised format.
Label Conditions: Both look brand new, no spindle mark are evident at all and this copy is as close to Mint as they will ever be found – a copy for the discerning collector for sure.
Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.
Cat Number: SHVL 814.
Weight of this Record: 113 grams. the fairly lightweight pressing is simply typical of this record. With the anticipated huge demand for this album, EMI were not going to press with what they would have deemed excessive use of vinyl that was still in relatively short supply at this time.
Country of Manufacture: England.
Rarity: It would be foolish say this album is even scarce, but only a small percentage are found with any of the original black wrapping on the cover. Barely played copies are even rarer and the serrated postcard is not so easy either. But by far the hardest part is finding a record that plays to a high standard for it’s entirety. I have mentioned this fact above in more detail. You can find run-of-the-mill examples of this album at any record fair on a regular basis, later pressings, noisy pressings, worn-out pressings, filthy covers, torn inserts, missing postcards - yes common. Complete, hardly-played, black-wrapped (especially this neat), original near mint contents, and a superb, cleaning playing record are a far different matter.
Original Year of Release: 1975

Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘HTM’ (on both sides)

Brief Info: Few rock fans will not know this album well. Consistently high in all, all-time great lists whether compiled by critics or the record-buying public, this album sold in vast numbers, but fewer remain in top overall conditions or play well and have all the original pieces. It’s success and huge demand is, I feel sure, why this record has so many problems. Pressed in vast numbers and usually on thinner vinyl, quality-control was not (possibly) high on the agenda, units in shops was the order-of-the-day, hence so many copies failed to impress for clean sound. Floyd’s homage to original guitarist/vocalist Syd Barrett, this has always been one of the band’s most popular albums and justifiably so. I will never even consider offering this classic set unless it plays well enough to do so and only a small percentage ever do, indeed this is first UK-pressed ‘Wish’ I have offered on Ebay for some time. If ‘average’ pressings were acceptable, I could offer this album regularly, but would give little to no pleasure in doing so. Many fans will still tolerate less than quiet pressings of this record to enjoy the true drama and impact of this beautifully produced album. Vinyl still has the edge in terms of dynamic range and impact and my LP12 made this record sound quite stunning – and what a joy when so clean and practically noise-free. The tiny few, low level ticks mentioned near the start of side one last only a brief few seconds and are immensely light, hence the word ‘tick’ to emphasise instead of the harder, louder word ‘click’. When heard devoid of the usual crackle and unwanted pressing sounds, it’s a thing of immense beauty. The saxophone break on ‘… Diamond’ still sends a shiver down the spine as does the effects on ‘… Machine’. An album of many quiet passages, any other unwanted sounds on this one barely even registered and was a pleasure from start to finish. The original packaging is close to complete, no opened example will ever have all the black wrapping and most-all buyers removed it all anyway - myself very much included when I bought a copy on the day of issue. I did not even consider keeping it on, I wanted to see the real cover not something that resembled a dustbin liner. But time changes opinions, and many want the original packaging, as near to complete as well. But few still exist with it included, hence the vast gain in price guide values for those that do. When all is taken into consideration, this is a much rarer copy and a fine chance for the Floyd collector to hear a way better than standard copy. This one totally blew me away and they do not come along often like this. Personally, I would never even consider buying a non- and critically play-graded copy of this album. Some of my regular buyers tell me they are almost stock-piling noisy copies, fed-up waiting for the ‘chance’ elusive quiet pressing to come along. Well, this may almost as good as they get, your choice. If a standard copy can truly be found that does not have the odd faint click or crackle trace, well it’s one in many thousands copy and I Wish I could hear it too. What makes this copy extra special is the lining on the cover is as close to complete as they get (allowing for small amounts of natural shinkage after opening). Most seen with the black wrapping only include a percentage still intact. This is almost complete and so very neat too. The incredible shine it retains is exactly as it was when purchased. Of the few that retain it, most are dulled with numerous splits and tears, simply look at this again to see what this special example is all about. The veryk best I have seen since I bought my copy back in 74.
Cover Grade and Format: I cannot grade the main cover definitively because I dare not even think about risking it’s removal from the shrinkwrap. Without ANY doubt, this has NEVER been removed and that’s the way it stays. I would assume all the covered areas, which is practically all, are like new, why would they not be, but that is assumption based on the fact they have never been exposed to handling or light. The opening edge is a little wavy due the pressure of the shrinkwrap contracting over the years. The fine white exposed strip is still pure white and the actual edge razor sharp. It is clear as it gets, the original owner opened this wrapping ultra carefully, leaving the full extent on, only over time has it contracted and shrunk a little. The fact is, these plastic shrinkwraps Do shrink, card certainly does not.
The Shrinkwrap and Sticker: Firstly, the sticker, which I do consider an important part of this album. This is little short of Mint and has clearly never been removed or tampered with with ultra crisp and sharp edges, excellent colour and freshness. One ultra fine burr trace only and totally uncreased. The shrinkwrap is, put into context, superb. It has some crinkle that was present on practically all from new. It appears opened with a very sharp blade on the opening edge and it has shrunken back around quarter of an inch each side – that is a tiny amount for this and overall, it has remained as neat and fresh looking as you will see anywhere. Even the cover edges, this has not split and the shine is simply incredible. The lack of handling marks or dulling is very unusual and any present are tiny, few and faint. Also worthy of mention is the intensity of the blackness, this has not aged at all and truly does, almost remind of new. Of course to access the contents, this had to be split, and the one-and-only original owner did this with utmost care to leave possibly one of the finest ‘Wish You Were Here’ shrinkwrapped covers you will ever see offered.
The Inner & Format: MINT(-): an unlined thick card inner and again never good for the record’s surface. Most discerning collectors immediately transferred the record to a lined inner to avoid abrasions to the surfaces. Often too late however, as many had marked in manufacture as the LP was rammed inside the inner in the packing factory. This is very nice indeed and still very white too, again looking practically as made. All edges unsplit with no repairs and barely even a record impression, the reason, the record was stored inside a lined replacement inner. Any edge creases tiny and faint as any minor surface trace blemishes seen under light. This has the shaped corners and the original wide top opening. Fresh, clean and near unbeatable.
The Post Card: MINT: this is the rarer serrated edged type, the majority are smooth cut. The ‘serrations’ are all very neat indeed and have avoided the burring and chipping many are seen with, all retain fully ink coverage with no whites worthy of mention. The front has a superb glossy finish that is pristine with not even a hairline, fingermark or scratch. The back pristine white and looking as made, there are NO creases worthy of mention, even to the performation tips. This is almost like a vintage postage stamp in Mint condition.
Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT(++) for once, it plays to that grade too. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy maybe played once before my sound check. Rarely have I seen cleaner or less-marked playing surfaces on this album. Side one has barely anything at all and side two, just three or four ultra fine hairlines seen under light. I remember almost holding my breath all those years ago when removing my own copy from that harsh, hard inner. Often you could hear grit and debris grinding into the surfaces as they were removed for the first time, hardly any wonder so many are seen wish many fine visual marks and hairlines, especially on those copies that were not stored in replacement soft-lined inners. This has little to fault and finding one of these mark-free will prove near impossible. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.
Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]
Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I reitterate, I have heard so many bad copies of this record (that I will never contemplate offering), it’s a true delight to be able to offer one that really does do this album full justice. I only want to hear quality sound, one even audiophile collectors can enjoy and these come along too to infrequently. One of the most difficult, if not indeed THE most difficult album in the Floyd catalogue that will play well on vinyl, this so often has light to moderate crackle, often present on the majority of the record. An album with a high percentage of quite passages, this becomes really critical – and somewhat irritating. If indeed anyone has a copy that plays perfectly for its entirety, well treasure it because it’s the exception rather than the rule. This superb example plays up too its visual grading and few will better it. This album is beautifully produced with breathtaking sound and dynamics and plays with powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is genuine high fidelity masterpiece. Such a pity the pressing quality did not alway match it. I am asked so often by regular buyers if I have a ‘perfect’ ‘Wish You Were Here’, but only very rarely can I offer a copy near that standard. Vinyl can rarely be absolutely silent. If silence is demanded, stick to the CD version or wait for the near impossible, but this record is probably as good as it gets on this title. I remind also, this was play graded at volume on my LP12 turntable, one of the most revealing and uncompromising audiophile front-ends ever made for quality vinyl reproduction and it reveals the blemishes as well as the astonishing sound that almost takes you into the recording studio itself. The stereo imagery of ‘Welcome to the Machine’ and the power of the bass synth has amazing depth, slam and resolution. A real test for any equipment and pressing. A tiny few, light ticks is almost the least that can be expected, rather this brief blemish that constant irritating crackle and pressing sounds that unfortunately are all-too common on this one. This is a great album musically and deserves it’s masterpiece status that remains undimished over the years. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record with no other blemishes worth of special mention and this has easy trouble-free tracking, this will give any system a real work out. The Sondek gleans every available piece of information that even the latest CD remasters fail to produce. There is something really special in owning a really clean copy of ‘Wish You Were Here’ and with the rest of the packaging in outstandingly high condition, this copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better. This can be strongly recommended – I just WISH all copies would play this well, but alas they rarely do – fact.
Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.
Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Rondo Red moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired with QED Silver terminated cable). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too.
First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or promp payment is a problem, please do not bid.
PACKING - THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.
What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing.
I now offer the fastest possible posting, often the very next day after payment is received or within two to three days maximum (unless on holiday). I only use FIRST-CLASS Mail. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and the cost of this lavish packing is NOT even charged for, I offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible for ultimate confidence. The boxes and ultra thick double-wall stiffners and bubble wrap make a near impregnable fortress for safe shipping and this is used inland and overseas for ALL my records, not just the rare and expensive. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than one in two thousand based on over 7,000+ items sold in nearly 10 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. The only damage rate acceptable for this seller is ZERO and I think my packets will offer just that. It would take a vicious postman or postal service to damage these for sure. Even one of these stiffeners cannot be bent by hand, so what chance 3 or 4 inside a box? Oneadayrecords is a MAILER-FREE ZONE. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FIVE records per box (one double can sometimes be included subject to total weight). I will not respond to questions on shipping costs as all the details are included here and on ALL of my adverts. Details below:
NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS.
Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder unless prior notice of any delay is given beforehand. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance – it’s always worth asking.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE
My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
