POP ART MUSIC by JONNY "PACIUGA" FARMER AND HIS QUINTETT aka MULATU ASTATKE & HIS ETHIOPIAN QUINTET - AFRO LATIN SOUL Lp. Original Italian pressing on CDI (COMPANY DISCOGRAFICA ITALIANA) label (CALP 2031), from 1966. Holy grail Italian issue of Mulatu's debut masterpiece, Afro Latin Soul ;) Released in the USA on the Worthy label in 1966 with monochrome op art sleeve design and amazingly, re-packaged under a fictitious group name for an eye-catching, yet never distributed, release in Italy. The Italians did yet another sneaky re-packaging stunt a few years later by adding crude special FX and additional "field recordings" to Mulatu's Afro-Latin Soul to create Le Allucinazioni (complete with alternative, LSD related sleeve artwork) in 1968. We've been quietly selling Le Allucinazioni for a long time but never even knew about the existence of Pop Art until a few years ago! Only a handful of copies have ever come up for sale, so we are super-happy to be able to offer this one. Mesmerizing, psychedelic themes featuring the pentatonic scales of Mulatu's vibraphone with groovy rhythms by Puerto Rican and African American musicians rumoured to include members of Mongo Santamaria's backing band. Sophisticated jazz / bossa / boogaloo and soft funk atmospheres with latin montuno / afro percussion / handclaps / vocals sung in Spanish and Amharic / exotic jungle sounds cum dub FX et al. Every track is superb so we have recorded everything. Our soundclip opens with the killer I FARAM GAMI I FARAM (re-titled as JAZZ AT MACUMBA on the Italian issue). A landmark entry in the evolution of the Ethiopian jazz sound. Great for DJs and a missing link for Mulatu collectors. Striking sleeve artwork too :) Very rare Lp!!!

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG eastern arabic african middle

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG+ condition with some hairlines / light scuffs and faint old pressing marks. Background surface noises but the recording source for the Italian CDI issue is unknown and the actual pressing quality of the original Worthy issue was never great either. Soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on our soundclip). Some audible static / distortions to intro of "Sixto" theme and small section of groove wear - faint scratches to outer dead wax area of side A causes one audible bump after final note of the last track. The laminated card sleeve is in VG++ condition overall with some ring marks and faint scuffing from storage. Some light corner wear in places. Light ding / laminate creasing to bottom right corner at the open side. Sharp looking item. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Very rare Lp!!! exotica
