The idea of sounds travelling is in a way, a definition of behaviour patterns associated With music, which in some way have affected the itineraries constructed by people. From the fifhteen century, the Portuguese sailed out in search of new seas and new lands, taking with them and bringing back from their voyages sounds, colours and flavours which functioned vary much as a gente mediator, contributing greatly to breaking down distances and revealing cultural affinities. In other words, by looking at the history of the Portuguese Navigations in thios saensorial aspects, we can also see the processes of Exchange in which music played an extremely relevant role, even tough it may not always have been particularly obvious.
Research into ethnomusicology has focused particularly on the issue of the journey itself in studies on migrant music, which began to gain ground in the 1980s. One of the most interesting results to emerge was that troughout the migratory process people carry elements that coud identify their home culture. An importante one of this was music, simply because of the ease With which it could be taken by the people who perform it. The journey of migration expresses paths, distances, breaks in affections and the seductions wrought by the two universes in confrontation: the one left behind, and the one receiving the new-comwer. I tis precisely in the relationship between what is mutually adopted and rejected in these two contexts tyha the journey of sounds can de defines.
