Enregistré en janvier 1978 au domaine de Chantaconia [Recorded in January 1978 at the Chantaconia estate].

Potemkine's third and final album, "Nicolas II" is their strongest, and something of an overlooked classic of late 70s prog. Following TRITON the band became a quartet again with Michel Goubin back on keyboards, and there had also been a period of intense gigging including opening for Magma on several occasions in France. All this made for a much tighter and more confident band than previously, both in terms of writing and playing.

POTEMKINE brought their Zheul-based background and feel into a very Canterbury style of jazz-prog: a quite unique realm of undiscovered territory! This album hasn't a weak track, every song it's full of musical acrobatics, technique, great arrangements and emotive playing. The Canterbury feel is given an extra edge here with the addition of pulsating rhythmic ornaments in various places. The lead guitarist's chops are immense and delicious - and his style shows a combination of McLaughlin's intense vibe and Phil Miller's melodic drive, which makes a perfect complement for Michael Goubin's keyboard deliveries.

NICOLAS II takes the Zeuhl of Magma's Attahk and adds the jazz fusion feel of Brand X, National Health, Gilgamesh and the Hatfields along with Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and Spectrum era Billy Cobham. The arrangements are dominated by the interplay of electric piano and very deft, exciting guitar, with Charles Goubin turning in some excellent lead guitar work. Throughout the album the playing is tight, the compositions are focussed and the production is crystal clear, most of the pieces sounding as though they were performed live in the studio.A dark feeling is also in evidence at times, specially in the composition, due to the MAGMA influences, bringing dark atmosphere, somber synth layers and mysterious chorale arrangements ...a spectral ambience that adds shadow to the light. The absolute epitome of all this, where it all culminates and comes together most brilliantly is in the extended closer "Amphitheatre Magique".

By combining the Magma-influenced zeuhl underbelly and creative Prog Jazz-fusion Potemkine create a hybrid which fans of both musical styles can appreciate. Those who dig what the RIO crowd or the more complex Canterbury units were doing in the late 1970s may also enjoy the album for its experimental take on jazz-rock (an element which underpinned many Canterbury and Rock In Opposition groups during the era).

VERY SCARCE - ARCHIVE Collector Keeper - You won't find a cleaner original issue anywhere today

From an utterly vast and deep record collection, from my life-long best friend
who was a DJ at the Radio Station I co-founded in the 1970's - and who worked for me at my California record store in the '70s and '80s.
Sadly he has now finally left this mortal coil, bequeathing me his deep Vinyl Mine.
.
Several thousand records (mostly LP's, but also hundreds of 45's), several hundred collectible and Rare, Out of Print CDs and Box Sets,
plus posters and other memorabilia will all eventually be listed.

Truly a great (and enormous) collection!

FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL or PRIORITY INTERNATIONAL - Your Choice.

* I reserve the right to cancel any bids by any international bidders with poor or very low feedback.

.

I do NOT EVER want to exclude all bidders from any particular country, even though a few specific countries are responsible for almost all spurious "not received" or "not as described" claims over the years. This evolves... for instance in France, buyers from Ile de France area seem, more and more, to be very prone to make a false claim. (one of my earliest, very best customers was from Ile de France but moved to Belgium some years back) ...so even there, I hate to exclude ALL buyers from there; however I cannot possibly afford to be scammed due to the unlucky result of a winning bidder being a bad actor. IF you are from that area and want to bid/buy, simply contact me first and give me good reason to trust you.

Also it seems to be the fun game recently for some in Germany, Spain and Italy to buy far more than the collector can afford and make false claims on many of them. Again I will need to know you can be trusted. Many, many great buyers in all those countries, but plenty of trouble comes from them as well. Brazil has terrible post/mail problems. Italy has long Customs hold times. In NONE of those cases is it my fault and I will not lose out because of other countries' problems beyond my control. Occasional problems from China and Russia -I reserve the right to cancel a sale or bids from any buyer, case-by-case if I note problematic behavior or red flags.

Having said that, I will not ever cancel any bidders with solid, good reputations and feedback.

I sell regularly to all those countries (though Ile de France bidders will definitely need to contact me FIRST before bidding).

I wish there was no need for this caution, but I must and I do protect myself.

If you are honest, responsible and genuine, we will never have a problem and you may bid with absolutely no worries.
