From New York to New Orleans, rapper Gabe 'Nandez joins producer Preservation for Sortilege, a 14-track album carried over from Preservation's 2022 project Aethiopes, and crystallised to fully smectic alignment in 2024. Drawing on shared Francophone ancestry - Preservation is half French, 'Nandez half Malian - tracks like 'Mondo Cane' and 'War' hear Nandez's baritone glides gut the mix with purpose, cutting through Preservation's intricate production, as a blend of esoteric textures and punchy breakbeats demand both speakers and headphones bleed feeling. Guests features from Armand Hammer, Koncept Jack$on, Ze Nkoma Mpaga Ni Ngoko, Benjamin Booker, and Billy Woods all punctuate the record, as drums range from rattling assaults to whispering pulses.
