PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION ‘1999 (The New Master)’ 12" Translucent Purple Vinyl EP (NPG Records, 1999)
As reported by the Ultimate Prince fansite, although he had succeeded in freeing himself from his constrictive Warner Brothers contract three years earlier, in 1999 “Prince remained frustrated by the fact that he didn't own his master recordings, and decided to take action. So he recorded seven new versions of the song” [‘1999’] for the EP featured in this posting entitled ‘1999: The New Master’ which was released under the name "PRINCE AND THE ИOITU⅃OVƎЯ" (with "Revolution" printed backwards and mirror reversed).
"I wanted to buy my masters back from Warner Bros.," Prince told PAPER Magazine in 1999. "They said no way. So I'm going to re-record them. All of them. […] Now you will have two catalogs with pretty much exactly the same music — except mine will be better — and you can either give your money to WB, the big company, or to [Prince’s own label] NPG [Records]. You choose."
This 12" translucent purple vinyl EP comes in its original generic white cardboard sleeve with title sticker: “7 NEW MIXES ON PURPLE VINYL / PRINCE AND THE ИOITU⅃OVƎЯ” The original shrinkwrap enveloping the sleeve is largely intact.
Both vinyl and sleeve, which show a modicum of light wear, look to be in Very Good Plus condition.
