Description
Up for auction is a SUPER RARE LP. This is Punch Opera's production of Doctor Cupid (L'amore Medico) by Wolf-Ferrari.
The Punch Opera Company was formed in 1951 in New York by the husband and wife team of Martha Moore Sykes and Nelson Sykes. Its performances were at the Cherry Lane Theater in Greenwich Village. According to the jacket of this record: "Punch Opera, an organization of talented young professional singers, was founded in the Fall of 1951, dedicated to the idea that there is a large and enthusiastic audience for intimate opera performed with a small cast, piano accompaniment and colorfully stylized sets and costumes." After several years, Punch was acquired by the New York City Opera, a company continued to operate until 2013.
Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876 - 1948) was an Italian composer and teacher. L'amore Medico had its world debut on December 4, 1913 at the Hoftheater in Dresden and its US premiere on March 25, 1914, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini.
The Punch Opera production was directed by Nelson Sykes, with music conducted by Rex Wilder and with piano accompaniment by Robert Boberg and Marbar Ylvisaker. The cast includes: Anita Beltram as Lucinda John Miller as Clitandro Martha Moore Sykes as Lisetta Milton Gorman as Pap Bettie Harris Fox as the Astrologer Rex Coston as the Magician Margaret Fittz as the Gypsy Richard Roussin as Doctor Tomes
