Original 1959 PYE record. English pressing. Black-and-gold collector series label. The LP is MINT and appears unplayed. Surfaces are smooth and retain their original lustre. There is no sign of spider tracery around the spindle hole. The jacket is MINT. Lamination on the front side is fully intact, while the back is spotlessly clean.
The G Major Symphony was Dvorak's eighth symphonic essay. It has been known as the "English" Symphony, largely because of a squabble between Dvorak and his German publisher. The composer gave the score to an English publisher, hence the designation. Far from being English in any sense, the G Major Symphony is Czech to its marrow-bones. The Dvorak G Major presents Sir John with a gloriously tuneful work that is really rather special. Under Barbirolli's hand, the Halle Orchestra gives it an especially sensitive account. It is certainly one of the most satisfying recordings the conductor ever made. He communicates the poetic and dynamic elements in a way that is consistently endearing. It's a shining gem!
Completing the album is the Scherzo Capriccio, one of the finest and most masterful of Dvorak's smaller orchestral works. It is aptly titled in that it is both humorous and capricious, and the Halle players and Sir John have a ball with it. What fun! Another must-have recording!
