ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This limited-edition 180g audiophile re-issue, now out-of-print, of Mercury SR90212 (US pressing, plum/silver label, SR 90212-A / SR 90202-B stampers, stereo, colorback jacket) features conductor Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s unsurpassed all-Chabrier album, “produced, musically supervised and 3- to 2-channel conversion for LP by Wilma Cozart Fine.”
The exact program is as follows:
España
(rec. at Cass Technical High School, Detroit, on 18 November 1959)
Suite pastorale
(rec. at Cass Technical High School, Detroit, on 18 November 1959)
Fête polonaise
(rec. at Cass Technical High School, Detroit, on 18 November 1959)
Overture to ‘Gwendoline’
(rec. at Cass Technical High School, Detroit, on 18 November 1959)
Danse slave
(rec. at Cass Technical High School, Detroit, on 18 November 1959)
Wrote critic Tony Haywood for MusicWeb-International: “I know of no other Chabrier collection that is carried off with more panache and life-affirming spontaneity. Although comparisons are often odious, I did have to hand a very serviceable disc from Armin Jordan and the French National Orchestra on Erato which has many of the same items and has served me well. Playing them side by side was rather cruel, for in just about every case Paray’s rhythmic grip and freewheeling exuberance made the French set seem mundane, workaday and even plain boring, even in this music. It’s not just about tempos (though in every case Paray has more urgency), rather about getting out of your orchestra playing of character, charisma and the right degree of wit and gusto. Thus the most famous item, the ubiquitous España, gets what must be the most sparkling and good-humoured performance ever committed to disc, Beecham notwithstanding. The lovely Suite pastorale is beautifully shaped, its disarming simplicity played straight and for the best, although the swift, almost aggressive, pace of the ‘Sous bois’ third movement may pull some listeners up short. The gloriously Wagnerian overture to ‘Gwendoline’ gets playing of great swagger and theatricality, and a truly uproarious performance of Bourée fantasque finishes the Chabrier items in fitting fashion.”
According to the website koolkatjazz, this recording “was transferred from the original 3-track master tapes on the all tube Bernie Grundman Mastering system. Wilma Cozart Fine was in attendance and carefully mixed the center channel during the transfer to lacquer.”
Note: Included is a double-side promotional insert with a testimonial by Robert Lawrence.
Incidentally, the striking cover art was executed by George Maas (design) and Henry Ries (photo). There are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Daniel G. Rubin.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the glossy laminated jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, and 2 tiny creases, but really that is all – otherwise, the album appears almost as new – overall, this rates as a truly fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is outstanding – overall, this rates as a superb collector’s copy.
