Modern Cool was dubbed by Audio magazine "one of the best jazz records of the century" and this LP features a previously-unreleased bonus track, Lennon & McCartney's "The Fool On The Hill." With the same sonic palette of deep dark dazzle as Cafe' Blue, her re-worked renditions of the Doors' "Light My Fire" and Paul Anka's "She's A Lady" join original songs and an adaptation of an E.E. Cummings poem performed with a full choir.

The husky-voiced Patricia Barber is perhaps the most intellectually ambitious of mainstream jazz singers. She writes much of her material and, in 2006, released a whole album based on Ovid's METAMORPHOSES! MODERN COOL (1998) is also one of her most musically adventurous albums, made up primarily of ambitious, finely played (and sung) originals--like the trend-watching opener, "Touch of Trash," and the exotic-flavored "Constantinople," which features Cassandra Wilson-like wordless vocals in addition to avant-trumpet star Dave Douglas and Jeff Stitley on the African udu. Not to neglect the old songbook, Barber also includes a few eclectically chosen covers: Arthur Schwartz's "You and the Night and the Music" done rock-guitar style, a tasty "Light My Fire," and a fun and funky "She's a Lady."

Chicago pianist and vocalist Patricia Barber makes ears burn. Her torch song touch speaks volumes to jazz vocal fanatics, but she has an adventuresome side that speaks likewise to fans of woollier jazz. Barber's vocal delivery is swaggering and burnished, always angling against oddball time signatures and often dropping weird lyrical science. From e.e. cummingspoems, Barber moves into prescient observations on our society: "For company in the 21st century," she sings, "I go to the club, talk through the show / I'm so hip there's nothing about jazz /That I don't know."

Trumpeter Dave Douglas and guitarist John McLean add a sharp edge, and the Choral Thunder Vocal Choir give Modern Cool soul-drenched dynamics that push the CD into the realm of instant classics. Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity does the rest, turning this set into one of the best-sounding vocal albums you will ever hear.
