Description

PAUL McCARTNEY and WINGS ULTRA RARE OFFICIAL 'BAND ON THE RUN' – 1984 UK **NIMBUS RECORDS SUPERCUT** STEREO LP – PAS 10007.

Nimbus Supercut LPs were released as a mail order only promotion to Practical Hi-Fi and Hi-Fi today magazine readers during the early 1980s. All Nimbus Supercut releases were available in limited quantities of around 1000 pressings per title, and as such, many are rarely seen for sale and are arguably rarer than releases from Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, DCC, etc. Nimbus established the need for high quality vinyl pressings at a time when most mainstream vinyl which was haphazardly mastered and pressed on poor quality recycled vinyl.

In contrast, Nimbus Supercut releases were mastered from the the original master tapes, through an all valve mastering process, using no limiting, to result in a high quality pressing which was as close as possible in sound to the original recording. Nimbus also had ICI produce an extremely pure vinyl for this release, which has exceptional frequency reproduction and is virtually noise free.

This Special Pressing LP is on the familiar Band On The Run record Labels, with all the usual titles and song credits, with Mfd in UK, and EMI Records Ltd on both record labels.

This Nimbus Pressing comes in a polythene lined Anti Static Record inner bag, and also has the original printed lyric inner sleeve, and is housed in it’s traditional Garrod & Lofthouse Picture Sleeve.

On the top right hand corner of the front of the sleeve, there is a gold coloured sticker which reads ‘Supercut Mastered and Pressed exclusively for readers of Hi-Fi Today by Nimbus Records’.

The matrix numbers hand etched into the trail out grooves read, on side 1 YEX 929-A and side 2, YEX 929-B

. Please note that the wording NIMBUS ENGLAND is machine stamped in the trail off area of the dead wax on both sides of the disc.

Both sides of the Record Labels are in stunning mint condition, showing no signs of play around the spindle holes, although the record has been played twice. The vinyl disc is in what I would describe as mint condition.

I bought two copies at the time and this one that I have for sale was kept as my spare.

As expected, the sound quality of this pressing is truly magnificent and it plays beautifully – needs to be heard personally to be fully appreciated!.

The Band On The Run Picture Sleeve is in Excellent condition, showing just record indentation and a slight light rub mark from when it arrived in the post.

Not included with the LP is a machine folded Band On The Run Polaroid Snapshots Poster. I have no idea if either copy had these posters when I got them as neither of them have them now.

For those of you with technical expertise, set out below is some further information about this truly superb pressing:

The equipment line up used to produce this pressing was as follows:

  • Neumann mastering lathe with Dr. Hallidays special varigroove system to take up less space for a given level.
  • Neumann 300 watt Valve cutting amplifiers with low noise front end by Dr. Halliday,
  • Studer A80 tape playback machine.
  • Passive gain control to minimise the amount of electronics in the signal path.
  • An Ortofon box which applied a variable low pass filter. This precaution was needed to protect the heads drive coils from up to 1.5 kWatts of peak energy. They were also cooled by helium gas.
  • Special vinyl was made for this pressing by ICI. This was delivered as a powder not as granules. It gave a flat frequency response so no HF boost had to be added at mastering.
  • A SUPERB LP, and one of McCartney’s best releases, in this rare Nimbus Supercut format.
This album doesn't come up for sale very often especially one in this condition so add it to your Nimbus Supercut collection, like fine wine over time they will only go up in value.
