Pet Shop Boys – Discography (The Complete Singles Collection) Parlophone – PMTV 3, 2 x Vinyl LPs, Compilation. UK. 1991. EXC / VG+
THE VINYL:
The 2 discs are in excellent condition with an occasional hairline mark. There are some signs of slight spindle wear but all of the white background labels are clear with excellent print. No labels have been stuck on the vinyl anywhere and there is no writing on the centres. Good, clean looking vinyl. (Exc.)
THE OUTER SLEEVE:
The outer sleeve is very good (VG) with 2 labels having been removed which have left marks. The double sticker still remains. Laminated sleeve with slight creasing in places but very little sign of ring-wear. No discolouration to speak of. Solid spine with lettering. No rips or tears.
THE INNER SLEEVES (2 ILLUSTRATED SLEEVES):
The two laminated inner, picture sleeves are a good VG+ with the occasional crease and mark with excellent pictures.
POST AND PACKING:
Postage is by Tracked, signed for delivery. The discs will be packed separately from the outer sleeve in a cardboard case with cardboard stiffeners. A plastic cover will be included for storage.
THE REVIEWS:
Where would the '80s have been without the Pet Shop Boys? Discography makes a compelling case for the notion of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe as pioneers, if not geniuses. Mixing the cold feel of Euro-techno beats with the Boys' quest for something warm between the sheets, "What Have I Done to Deserve This" and "Suburbia" sound almost soulful. Although they seemed to be suffering from a terminal case of boredom, they managed to alchemize their ennui into touching sentimentality in "Love Comes Quickly," "Rent," and, especially, the AIDS-oriented "Being Boring." Discography begins with the Pet Shop Boys' beginning, "West End Girls," traveling past "Domino Dancing" and including their covers "Always on My Mind," and the medley "Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.)" --Steve Gdula
Pet Shop Boys more or less ruled the charts in the second half of the 1980s with their intelligent, melodic synth-pop, with mostly their “Actually” album from 1987 turned everything into gold, they posed a threat in hit singles ranking even to George Michael. The whole Europe and even America (at times) embraced them, singles “It’s a Sin”, “Heart”, “Always on My Mind” cover and the clever duet with Dusty Springfield “What Have I Done to Deserve This” all sounded original and had great hooks. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe managed to tread the tricky path between streetwise and generally accessible. They were never celebrities of the first rank, able to keep a degree of their distance and privacy even facing the ruthless British tabloid.
From 1989 on, their presence in total spotlight gradually gave way to other artists and styles, but the disco of Pet Shop Boys remains as fresh as ever even in 2020 with their album “Hotspot” - this terrific compilation from their heyday (1985-1991) remains a proof that commercial success is sometimes very much deserved.
