Sir Peter Maxwell Davies composed this large-scale ballet score in a mere six months. The music is not as intricately intense as in the cycle of symphonies which he had recently embarked on, and sounds in places more like a distant cousin of The Rite of Spring than of the Strauss opera. But Salome has an expansive confidence in its handling of a large orchestra, and there's a relish for the more grotesque aspects of the subject which reflect Davies's wealth of experience in works of music theatre concerned with violence and madness.
This recording was made some weeks before the ballet's first performance by the Fleming Flindt Circus Company in Copenhagen, and Janos Fürst and his players do wonders in keeping the tricky score on the rails.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies komponierte diese große Ballettpartitur in nur sechs Monaten. Die Musik ist nicht so intensiv wie im Zyklus der Symphonien, die er vor kurzem begonnen hatte, und klingt an Orten, die eher wie ein entfernter Verwandter des Frühlingsritus klingen, als wie in der Strauß-Oper. Aber Salome hat ein großes Selbstvertrauen im Umgang mit einem großen Orchester, und es macht Spaß, die groteskeren Aspekte des Themas zu behandeln, die Davies' Erfahrungsschatz in Werken des Musiktheaters, die sich mit Gewalt und Wahnsinn beschäftigen, widerspiegeln.

Diese Aufnahme entstand einige Wochen vor der ersten Aufführung des Balletts durch die Fleming Flindt Circus Company in Kopenhagen, und Janos Fürst und seine Spieler können Wunder vollbringen, wenn sie die knifflige Partitur im Gleichgewicht halten.

EX > EXZELLENT : Die Platte zeigt nur minimale Abspielspuren und Abstriche an der Klangqualität sind sehr gering. Ähnliches gilt für das Cover.

VG > VERY GOOD : Man sieht der Platte an, daß sie des öfteren abgespielt worden ist; leichte Kratzer und Gebrauchsspuren sind vorhanden. Die Klangqualität ist jedoch noch gut. Das Cover hat Gebrauchsspuren, jedoch keine größeren Schäden.
