When this boxed set came out, none of the stores in my area had gotten on the vinyl format yet. So, I called ABKCO Records in New York, and ordered Phil Spector - Back To Mono on vinyl - 5 LP boxed set - directly from them.
When I got it, I was playing it through the first time, and when I got to record #3, it didn’t finish the first song before it started skipping. I took the record off the turntable and put it back on, and tried again…. still skipped.
So I called ABKCO Records again. They said they were aware of the issue - Record #3 had been pressed off-center. They gave the standard line of return it to your retailer… and I told them I got it from them and gave them the purchase info. They gave me instructions to send it back to them, and they said I would receive it back once they got Record #3 re-pressed.
I called every few weeks for a four months - and had to explain every time that they were “my local retailer.” After several calls, I finally got good news. They said they had received the new Record #3 and would be sending my box set soon. I got a letter with an explanation that they had taken my original box set, removed the defective Record #3 and inserted the new one.
They unfortunately, also let it set on someone’s desk for four months and it had a large donut-sized stain on the front of the box and was partially torn! I sent it back with instructions I had used before, along with a very detailed letter of dissatisfaction for all of the run around and damaged box I got in return.
A day or two later, I got a call from them. They apologized profusely over the phone, and explained that they were going to send me a new boxed set by UPS Overnight. They explained that the box would not be sealed because they had to remove the wrapping to exchange Record #3 in the box they were sending me.
The next day I got a new, opened box set with an apology letter (that I tore the house up trying to find - it’s gone - it was 34 years ago after all…). However, I do have proof for this story. As an apology, they also sent me promotional t-shirt for the boxed set (which I did still have after 34 years - yay!).
I put Record #3 on the turntable, played the entire first song to ensure it didn’t skip. I then put the Record back in its sleeve and put it back on the shelf. I had purchased the CD version of the boxed set while waiting for mine to come back fro them. By the time I got it, I never listened to the new box they sent.
So, you are bidding on an unplayed (except song 1 on Record #3, played once), non-skipping Phil Spector - Back to Mono 5LP vinyl boxed set.
The set includes 4 records, plus a 5th record containing the album “A Christmas Gift For You” (aka - Phil Spector’s Christmas Album). The box set also contains a very detailed book of lyrics and musician information. You also get a “Back to Mono” button included in the boxed set.
You’ll also get the promotional t-shirt ABKCO Records sent me as an apology. Sorry, I washed and wore it a couple of times back then, but it’s still in pretty good shape. Size Large.
I noticed one thing about the boxed set when I got it. The paper sleeves are thin and cheap. The front side of Record #1s sleeve has wear on it from the book sliding back and forth in the box. I put a record sleeve over the record sleeves to prevent the book from doing more damage. I’ve pictured all 5 sleeves - they all look alike except for #1.
Condition is in the eye of the beholder, so study the pictures closely before bidding and let me know if you have any questions or would like to see more pictures posted.
