Rare original 1967 UK 11-track 1st pressing blue & black Columbia label MONO vinyl LP album, housed in a front laminated flipback picture sleeve manufactured by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd without the 'File Under Pop' text on the back.  Original Inner Sleeve depicting EMI artists of the day in VG condition-NOTE: A very Early Issue of this LP with Mother Stamper of A1-A1 - within the first few copies pressed! Has the KT Tax stamp on label.

The sleeve has some signs of age with a small creases in the laminate, generally good condition for 45 years old! The vinyl has some surface marks but plays without problems, the label has some spindle marks - overal would be classed as VG, still a great copy SX6157.

Background :-

This remarkable first pressing was released on August 5, 1967 and one month later it was released in stereo. The album's title comes from the title of the seventh chapter of Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows' !

The mono mixes of each track were done at seperate sessions, as it was the main format. The whole stereo album mix was a one day thing, so this really is the definitive mix of this classic album with significant differences to the stereo mix.

Subtle changes in effect abound, moment to moment gradations that can alter the flow of an entire track. For example, Syd Barrett’s whoops and shouts on 'Take up thy Stethoscope and Walk' are simply dripping with delay and the environment constantly morphs, unlike the stereo version which is 'fixed'. The coda of 'Flaming' is shorter than on the stereo version, as is 'The Gnome'. There's a whole layer of organ missing on the stereo mix at the start of 'Interstellar Overdrive' with a bongo fadeout and seriously different parts
in 'Pow R Toch H'. As the engineer said many years later 'The omission of things in the stereo mixes was really just because of the time - or lack of it - spent over these' - Mono was the de-facto standard& the stereo, like 'Sgt Pepper', was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.

Condition-

Detailed description- Played on  My REGA 3 turntable through headphones for accuracy -
Vinyl:The vinyl is totally flat and has retained its original high sheen. Under 160 watt halogen spotlight there are various hairlines, marks and scuffs on either side. I have played the entire record and it was a pleasure to listen to. On side one I heard  a couple of clicks but other than that there is just a bit of background crackle and static which can be heard in the quiet bits. Side two has a little in the way of background noise. This really is a very nice playable copy.
Labels: Both labels look great with absolutely no signs of damage, tears, writing, stickers etc and just typical light spindle marking.
Sleeve: The sleeve is nice and clean with no damage, splits, tears or stickers etc and just light signs of use. There are a few small laminate creases near the opening and a few wrinkles along the spine and top edge. The unlaminated rear has a few scuffs and dark marks from age but this is a very presentable copy. The flipbacks are all intact and near perfect.
Edge/corner wear: There is very little wear to the laminated edges or spine and just slight signs at the opening. There is some moderate wear to the corners.
Inner sleeve: Original EMI advertising inner sleeve. Just slight signs of age. No splits or damage. Only aged a little. This is the first black and cream inner sleeve not the purple/white one

Overall I would describe this as a VG condition- Please don't expect a NR MINT copy- this is 45 years old.
