COMMENTS: Formed in 1965, London, England by Waters, Wright and Mason. They were initially named ‘The Screaming Abdads’, with three others, Clive Metcalfe, Keith Noble and Juliette Gale but after discovering Syd Barrett, these three were dismissed and they adopted the name Pink Floyd (taken from the bluesman PINK ANDERSON and the FLOYD district council). In March 1966, they were regulars at London’s Marquee club where they played every Sunday afternoon. These gigs were as ‘spontaneous underground’. They played at the UFO club in 1966 and then in early 1967 were signed to EMI’s “Columbia” label. They played a benefit at Alexandra Palace in 1967 for the underground paper, International Times. They were the first UK band to use light shows and project slides as they played. In early 1968, Syd’s old school friend, David Gilmour, was added to play the live gigs because Syd was becoming too spaced out to cope. In April 1968, Syd was asked to leave and he became a recluse in his Cambridge home
