After years of toiling in relative obscurity, Pink Floyd hit a home run in 1973 with their iconic Dark Side of the Moon, an album that stayed in the Billboard top 200 for nearly fifteen years.  Conveniently for the band, their contract with Capitol/EMI was up after that release, and they quickly jumped ship to CBS/Columbia, where they went on to release such mega-sellers as Wish You Were Here and The Wall.

Capitol, of course, was still sitting on a significant backlog of Pink Floyd material, and not just Dark Side of the Moon.  They had seven other albums by the band as well as two compilations, and with no new material from the band coming their way, the label had to do something to remind consumers about all that Pink Floyd back catalog waiting for them at their local record store.

The solution by Capitol's marketing department was the record offered for sale here was the visually appealing, but misleadingly titled, Pink Floyd Tour '75.

Pink Floyd Tour '75 was titled to sound as though it were a live album and look like a bootleg; two things that were certain to get radio station program managers to at least check the album out, and perhaps, play some of the songs on the radio in order to get buyers into the stores.  The cover did look like a bootleg; it was a simple white cover and the album title and song titles were rubber-stamped on the front.  Each cover was effectively unique, as no two received the same amount of ink or pressure.  The label on the record was a simple white one, with the album title, the names of the songs, the words, Not for Sale" and a simple copyright notice.

All of the tracks on the album were deep cuts from prior albums, rather than hits.  A handful of copies were issued to American radio and the record was not released anywhere else worldwide.  There was NO commercial release of this album, a genuine oddity in the Pink Floyd catalog.  It's rare enough that many longtime Pink Floyd fans have never heard of it, let alone seen a copy.

THE RECORD

The record is a very nice VG++, with only a few minor marks from being taken out of the paper sleeve.  I didn't see any spindle marks; it's possible that the record hasn't been played.

Hand-etched stamper numbers are SPRO-8116-F1 and SPRO-8117-F1.  The words "mastered by Capitol" are machine stamped in the dead wax, indicating an original legitimate pressing.

This record is an original 1975, white label promotional-only LP issued to radio stations.  It is not a counterfeit, reproduction or import.  Stock, or commercial copies of this album are not known to exist.

The record contains lush, full, analog recordings, rather than modern digital reproductions.

THE COVER

The cover retains its full whiteness, and aside from a dent in two corners, is a very nice M-.  The front cover has the rubber-stamped album and song titles, though, as with most copies of this title, all of the song titles have not been fully rendered by the stamp.  The back cover is blank, as were the back covers of all copies of this release.

This album has never been reissued, nor has it ever been released on compact disc or any other format.

This is a beautiful example of a very hard to find promotional LP by one of the world's most collectible bands.
