Wish You Were Here è il loro nono album in studio, pubblicato nel settembre 1975. In Welcome to the Machine trova largamente impiego il VCS3. I tre brani erano Shine On, Raving and Drooling e Gotta Be Crazy.

The Pink Floyd were a British rock band formed in the mid-sixties, during a long and troubled career, has managed to rewrite the musical trends of his time and become one of the most important bands in rock history. Although at the beginning were mainly influenced by the psychedelic rock and space rock, the kind to which they belong is mostly progressive rock. Characterized by philosophical texts, sound experiments, innovative graphics and spectacular concerts have sold over 210 million records worldwide, including 74.5 million in the United States of America. Pink Floyd have influenced greatly the later music, from progressive groups of the seventies, like Genesis and Yes, up to contemporary musicians such as Nine Inch Nails and Dream Theater. The group, born in London in 1965, was formed by singer / guitarist Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett, bassist George Roger Waters, drummer Nicholas Berkeley "Nick" Mason and keyboardist Richard William "Rick" Wright. In 1968 he joined the band guitarist Jon David "Dave" Gilmour, who replaced Barrett, who was forced to flee from psychiatric problems exacerbated by the use of hard drugs. The band, after having made a lasting impression with a psychedelic print jobs, it reaches maturity with Atom Heart Mother, and states in the world with The Dark Side of the Moon and the subsequent album, including Wish You Were Here and The Wall, who deliver the four to the history of rock. The training does not undergo substantial changes until 1985, excluding a period in which Wright is mentioned only as a session musician. In 1985, Waters left the band, the remaining members subsequently released two more highly successful studio albums: A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. The formation ceases trading in 1995 and disbanded in 2006, when Gilmour officially denies the possibility of a reunion.Con Wright's death in 2008, he made off of the hopes of the fans.
Wish You Were Here is their ninth studio album, released in September 1975. Inspired by the material that composed them during their performances throughout Europe, was recorded in several sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London. During 1974, Pink Floyd had identified three new compositions, "Raving and Drooling", "Gotta Be Crazy" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and performed in a series of concerts in France and England. At the time the band had never hired a publicist and kept their distance from the press. Their relationship with the media had soured and, after a deeply cynical criticism of the new material the band Nick Kent (a devotee of Syd Barrett) and Pete Erskine of music magazine NME, Pink Floyd returned to the studio the first week 1975. As in their earlier work, The Dark Side of the Moon, the band has used in the study of numerous effects and sintetizzatori.Roy Harper was the guest singer in Have a Cigar. The graphics of the album was designed by Storm Thorgerson, and stipulated that the disk was wrapped by a black opaque envelope to hide the album art. Wish You Were Here was the first time played live at Knebworth in July 1975 and was published in September of that year. The album was issued in place of 209 in the list of the 500 greatest albums of Rolling Stone. The song Shine On You Crazy Diamond was originally designed to be placed on an entire side, but given that his life was over, it was decided to divide it into nine parts, grouped into two blocks. In the remaining space on the disk were included three other songs. It is very difficult to distinguish the different parts and there are several theories about their exact breakdown. On July 9, 1975, just as it affected this song appeared in the study Syd Barrett, but no one recognized him and Pink Floyd continued to play. Wright sat next to him and recognized only after many minutes in that figure is now fat and bald their friend Syd. That day David Gilmour married with his girlfriend, American Ginger, and invited Barrett to the wedding party. Syd went with his former comrades, but after a while 'disappeared as it had appeared. Welcome to the Machine "and" Have a Cigar, according to many opinions, describe the relationship of Syd Barrett (but, in the broadest sense, every musician, including Pink Floyd), respectively, with the outside world and the environment of the show, blaming both of his mental imbalance, along with drug abuse as a contributory cause. In Welcome to the Machine is widely used on VCS3. Regarding the text, the company (in the song, first-person plural "we") welcomes a young guitarist with words of disillusionment (eg in the sentence we told you what to dream, "we told you what to dream"). The reference to Barrett can be seen in several places, for example, that a young man had been part of the Boy Scouts (Provided with toys and Scouting for Boys, "well stocked with toys and Scouting for Boys", the book written by Robert Baden-Powell) and his love of cars (He loved to drive in His Jaguar, "He loved to drive his Jaguar"). The song is accompanied by an animated video created by Gerald Scarfe (which will implement the animated sequences for The Wall). Have a Cigar is described in the experience of the group's first recording contract, citing an incident really happened in 1967 when they signed to EMI: the manager who was putting them under contract asked the group of them was the "Pink" Pink Floyd, considering the name of the group a personal name (Oh, by the way, Which One is Pink? "way, which one of you is Pink?"). Have a Cigar does not have a final piece in the middle of the sound is like being sucked into the right channel amplifier is reduced almost to zero, very low quality. The piece is now as if it were transmitted by a radio in mono. At this point you hear the sound of a person who enters a room. The person change the radio stations (you can hear a dialogue between two people, then classical music), until you tune to a song for solo guitar. The pleasure (and an old guitar riff of Pink Floyd) and repeats it with his guitar: You Wish You Were Here and he's David Gilmour. The sound quality is now very high, we are back on the disk. Some of the songs, as usual, before being engraved were long "tested" live. The three pieces were Shine On, Raving and Drooling and Gotta Be Crazy. Shine On Shine On You Crazy Diamond became, instead of Roger Waters decided not to include the other two, which were included in the album with the names of Animals and Sheep Dogs. Roger Waters, exhausted, had to sing Have a Cigar with their friend Roy Harper, who was at the recording studio alongside. Another unique presence on the album is one of the celebrated jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, who was recording an album in the studio below with Yehudi Menuhin and was called by Waters to play the song Wish You Were Here, but the recording was later erased . The cover and the images that appear were the work, as usual, the Hipgnosis of Storm Thorgerson, but it was particularly difficult for that particular idea had to give: that of not giving any indication of place and represent surreal situations. The album came packaged in a cellophane bag black to hide the real cover in the shops, intended only for the public, but many of the shopkeepers took off thinking of doing a favor to its customers.
