At the height of late-60s pop saturation, LA's answer to the Beatles were juggling TV fame, touring fatigue and a growing taste for studio autonomy. First out in 1967, this fourth album came as their third full-length of the year and followed Headquarters, pushing further into self-directed territory with barbed lyrics, electric banjo and an early rock appearance from the Moog. From piecemeal shows to city-wide studios, the pace seeps into the music, a slightly fractured energy powering 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', 'Daydream Believer' and 'Salesman'. It became their fourth straight US chart-topper, sitting five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200.
