Description
Classic psychedelic album. Considered by many to be the first rock opera. Reissue on heavyweight 12 inch, 180 gram virgin vinyl. Limited numbered edition remastered from the original mono analogue tapes. Reissued on Snapper Records in 2000. Originally issued on Columbia in 1968 as SX-6306. Gatefold cover with lyrics and narrative on inside cover. This is also one of the first DIY albums. With a limited studio budget, the Pretties did the cover design and photography and played all of the instruments (similar to the Moodies "In Search of the Lost Chord" but stylistically different. Most of the lead vocals are handled by Phil May. All five contribute background vocals. Keyboardist John Povey sings lead in "I See You". Dick Taylor in "Baron Saturday". Bassist Wally Allen shares lead vocals in some songs with May. One can figure out the first and middle names of the members in the end of "Private Sorrow" where producer Norman Smith calls out the names of dead and wounded (all with the surname of Smith). The studio effects are reminiscent of early Pink Floyd whom Smith also produced. This album was recorded at Abbey Road studios where the Beatles also recorded.
