Description

Allen Shaw, Moanin' the Blues b/w I Couldn't Help It on Vocalion 2844.  Extremely rare--there isn't even a photo of either label on the Internet, other than those I've posted here--and legendary.  This was Shaw's only release, which is a shame, because he could write (he penned both sides), play the guitar, and sing with the best of them.  Shaw was from Memphis, and plays guitar on several Hattie Hart sides; supposedly Memphis Willie (Borum) is on this record, too.  Cut in September of 1934, they must not have pressed many, because this is pretty much impossible to find.

This copy is about V+, still has a couple bands with decent gloss on both sides, though other parts are fully dulled.  Plenty of light to moderate scratches, including some that can be felt with a fingernail.  There's a needle dig on Moanin' the Blues, but it doesn't skip or stick on my Stanton even at very low tonearm weights.  Very small edge chip in the dead wax on I Couldn't Help It doesn't affect cuing.  That side also has the number 1 written on the label.  Overall, a very serviceable copy of a true rarity.

I have included full MP3s of both sides of all the old blues 78s I'm currently auctioning.  These are completely unmanipulated, and I expect the records might sound significantly better with the exact right needle size for each one and a little EQ work.

Grading

N-   Looks about perfect

E+   No groove wear or scratches.  Very light signs of handling.  Full gloss.

E     Minimal groove wear, a few minor scuffs or light scratches. Excellent gloss.

E-    More noticeable groove wear and a moderate amount of scuffs and/or light scratches.  Decent gloss.

V+   Has been played plenty and shows significant groove wear with numerous scuffs and light to moderate scratches.  Some gloss.  Still plays decently.  A typical used, old 78.

V     Heavily played, plenty of marks and scratches, no gloss.  Still listenable, though surface noise will be pronounced.

V-    Seriously worn, gray surface with loads of marks and scratches, some heavy.  Significant surface noise.

G    Terrible, but plays.
