Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records. The soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name, it is the first album where his band the Revolution is billed. Purple Rain was musically denser than Prince's previous albums, emphasizing full band performances, and multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, electronic synthesizer effects, drum machines, and other instruments.

Much of the album had a grandiose, synthesized, and psychedelic sheen to the production and performances. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career, though a number of elements point towards the more experimental records Prince would release after Purple Rain. The music video for the album's lead single "When Doves Cry" sparked controversy among network executives, who thought its sexual nature was too explicit for television. The risqué lyrics of "Darling Nikki" raised complaints from Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center and contributed to the implementation of Parental Advisory stickers and imprints on album covers.

Purple Rain became Prince's first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop on the Billboard 200 and was present on the chart for a total of 122 weeks. "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Purple Rain" peaked at number two and "I Would Die 4 U" peaked at number eight. In May 1996, the album was certified 13x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Its total sales stand at 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Prince and the Revolution won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, while Prince also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the film Purple Rain.

Music critics noted the innovative and experimental aspects of the soundtrack's music, most famously on the spare, bass-less "When Doves Cry". Other aspects of the music, especially its synthesis of electronic elements with organic instrumentation and full-band performances along with its consolidation of rock and R&B, were identified by critics as distinguishing, even experimental factors. Purple Rain is regularly ranked among the greatest albums of all time. Rolling Stone ranked the album #8 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important".

Play-Testing:  I test my records by playing them completely through unless NM or Sealed (in order to protect their quality) before listing.

Surface Marks:  I do not get dissuaded by surface scratches on albums, that does not mean the Album skips so please be comfortable if you receive one from me with them - as the records are previously owned.

Record Jackets:  I try and grade jackets and albums as one set but oftentimes the jacket may not be in as good of a condition as an album.  I will provide two grades if significant in my description above. 

Generic Record Jackets:  I do not show pictures of album covers unless I have them in the condition seen.  My albums with generic covers are usually VG+ or better with very few graded as VG.  These are often times hidden gems at great prices!!

Inner Sleeves:  I do not mention these unless they have specific characteristics.  I provide a replacement inner sleeve if the one I have has extensive damage.

Grading:  The detailed grading I use is Goldmine Standard/eBay Standard. Descriptions are below:

Mint (M) Vinyl - Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed. Inserts/Sleeves: Perfect 

NM - A nearly perfect record. A record has more than likely never been played, and the vinyl will play perfectly, with no imperfections during playback.  Sleeves/Inserts should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other noticeable similar defects. 

VG+ Record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Defects should be more of a cosmetic nature, not affecting the actual playback as a whole. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences.  The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, barely noticeable. Spindle marks may be present. Inserts/sleeves will have some slight wear, slightly turned-up corners, or a slight seam split. 

(VG) Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a songs intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

(G/G+) A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be played through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise, scratches, and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, or other defects will be present. While the record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and "ticks" will almost certainly accompany the playback.
