One of the rarest Prince records you can lay your hands on….
The Story Behind the UK Promotional Release of D.M.S.R.
When 1999 was first prepared for release in the UK, Warner Bros. believed the full US double-album format might not sell strongly enough. To reduce the perceived commercial risk, the British edition was issued as a single LP, with D.M.S.R. omitted from the track listing.
Following the album’s success in the United States and the positive response to Prince’s live performances, interest in the artist grew rapidly. With discussions of a possible UK tour gaining momentum, Warner Bros. sought to increase promotion of the British release.
To support the campaign, the label produced a highly limited promotional pressing of approximately 200 copies of the D.M.S.R. single. These were distributed exclusively to UK radio stations and DJs to generate additional airplay and publicity for the UK edition of 1999, while also helping build anticipation for the proposed tour.
Today, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce. It is estimated that only 60–70 copies remain in known collections and archives, in varying conditions. As a result, this official Warner Bros. promotional release is regarded as one of the most desirable and elusive Prince collectibles.
This copy has to be one of the best left out there.
