Original UK Regal Zonophone blue label mono press.

This is Procol Harum's first studio album, recorded from April to June 1967 at Olympic Studios, London and released in December 1967. The band had been formed in April by Gary Brooker & Keith Reid, after they had spent months trying to become songwriters and teamed up with Matthew Fisher who had just left Screaming Lord Sutch's band. Their first single 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' was recorded in April with session musicians and rush released in May, after pirate radio play made it a hit. The band was still trying to find a guitarist & a drummer, finally settling on Robin Trower & Barry Wilson. The original recordings were done in multi-track, but the tapes went missing soon after the UK mono mix was completed, so that the US release in September was in both mono & re-mixed stereo and included their hit single. The band went on to tour to acclaim in America after multiple management problems & lawsuits from former members delayed its release in the UK until December 1967 and led to very poor sales.

This is the original pressing with the first label variant with the rough blue Regal Zonophone labels with the 'Sold In The UK....& The Gramophone Co...' label texts and the earliest A-2 B-2 matrices and 1-P 1-A stampers of the very first pressings!  
The Garrod & Lofthouse flipback laminated sleeve sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light corner/edge wear and some light laminate rubbing and a couple of small creases on the front cover. The unlaminated rear cover has some light storage rubbing & a small sticker scar. The spine is intact and fully readable, the plain company inner is intact, discoloured & in VG+ condition.  
The record is in visually EX condition, with only a few faint hairlines and a couple of light needle marks & scuffs visible on each side, but there are two small needle drop marks on the last track on side 2. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of a few spindle markings on each side.  
The sound reproduction is VG+ to EX, still clear & precise with definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some low background noise during the run-in grooves and some brief background noise in a couple of the quieter passages on each side, with three clicks caused by a needle drop on the last track of side 2.
Overall, still a really great, loud and punchy listen.  
The matrix nos. are; XCARX-37-2 stamper 1-P, XCARX-38-2 stamper 1-A. This is one of the early copies of the 1st pressing of the original 1967 UK mono 1st issue of this album!


All lp's are sent in cardboard record mailers with plastic covers and cardboard stiffeners to protect the LP's!!   UK Signed For Postage is £4.50 for the first LP & is the same for up to four single LP's or two double LP's or more up to 2kg.
