Queen came fully formed and hit the ground running on their eponymous debut LP and almost every one of Queen's signatures are already present, from Freddie Mercury's operatic harmonies to Brian May's rich, dense, orchestral guitar work.
That rich, florid feel could be characterised as glam, but even in these early days that appellation didn't quite fit Queen, since they were at once too heavy and arty to be glam and — ironically enough, considering their legendary excess — they were hardly trashy enough to be glam.
But that only speaks to the originality of Queen: they may have traded in mystical sword 'n' sorcerers themes like so many '70s prog bands, and they may have hit as hard as Led Zeppelin (and Jimmy Page's guitar army certainly was a forefather to May's overdubs), but they didn't sound like anybody else, they were too odd in their theatricality to be mistaken for another band.
That much was apparent on this debut, but one thing was crucially missing: songs that could coalesce their sound and present it in a memorable fashion.
There is an exception to that rule — the wild, rampaging opener "Keep Yourself Alive," one of their very best songs — but the album plays like a succession of ideas, and the group's predilection for suites only highlights this, despite the occasional blast of fury like "Modern Times Rock & Roll."
This can be quite appealing as sheer, visceral sound and, in that regard, Queen is kind of irresistible. It showcases the band in all their ornate splendour yet it's strangely lean and hard, revealing just how good the band was in their early days as a hard rock band.
Track Listing:
Side 1: KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE / DOING ALL RIGHT / GREAT KING RAT / MY FAIRY KING
Side 2: LIAR / THE NIGHT COMES DOWN / MODERN TIMES ROCK 'N' ROLL / SON AND DAUGHTER / JESUS / SEVEN SEAS OF RHYE...
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with light/moderate spindle traces - this copy has seen some play but only on a quality equipment and very carefully handled - EXCELLENT++
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (light wispy sleeve hairlines only) - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Audio: The audio is outstanding throughout with a crystal clear, rich, strong and vibrant sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listing and it's always a pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no clicks/pops and barely any surface noise (hardly any in fact, which is extremely rare for this pressing and the quiet sections of the beautiful "Doing All Right" - always the most problematic track - play beautifully). Overall, a great sounding copy and one which plays throughout to an extremely high standard with no groove-wear or distortion and is critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - in my experience very hard to find a first press copy which plays as well as this
SLEEVE: The delicate, very thin and flat matt G&L cover is strictly graded as EXCELLENT. Unlike most sleeves I have seen there is no heavy ring wear (just some record impression) and the whole sleeve is clean and unrubbed. The edges and spine - where all text is clear and bold - are crisp with just the central top edge showing record impression (the cover is not split at this point). This top edge has the same text as on the spine. There is a small 'bump' to the bottom opening corner. Overall, a very fine example indeed of this thin, delicate and extremely easily worn sleeve
INNER SLEEVE: The original plain white inner is EXCELLENT++ with no splits (The LP is now housed - and will be posted in - a new inner (with anti-static liner) to prevent any 'knifing' damage to the original inner during transit)
