A Night At The Opera 2/2 1st pressing

This very first pressing comes complete with a very clean gatefold and the original inner.  S1 in particular has stunning audio with a little interference here and there on S2.

This has Blair's (not 'Blairs cut') etched onto the run out grooves as per all the 2/2 pressings.

The audio on S1 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority)

The audio on S2 is Ex (Ex+ / Near Mint in some sections)

  This is a very clean vinyl and still has a very impressive glossy sheen.  I can only detect a handful of very faint hairlines with only one short one on S2 that is a little more obvious.  There is not very much spindle wear and the run out grooves are also super clean.

Play grading

'Death On Two Legs' has very powerful audio with no distortion and the clarity is very impressive.  In fact the only 'background' is a little static on the intro and there are no clicks or pops anywhere.  'Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon' also plays very clearly with only a couple of light clicks.  'I'm In Love With My Car' has audio that can only be graded as Mint- the strength and definition is stunning.  'You're My Best Friend' is near perfect with only a minimal hint of static on the fade out and '39' is another track playing with sublime clarity.  Again this qualifies as Mint- as there is just no obvious 'background'.  'Sweet Lady' keeps up this fantastic standard and 'rocks out' loud and true with no distortion.  The strong bass sound here is so strong and complements the track so well.  As anyone knows 'Seaside Rendezvous' always plays with some distortion but I am pleased to say this is one of the cleanest versions I have heard in a long time.  There is very little intrusive distortion and again no clicks or pops.

There is some light static/crackle on 'The Prophet's Song' intro but it is generally accepted that intros on any side will play with some 'background', that is the very nature of vinyl.  It certainly isn't intrusive.  As the track progresses it plays very clearly and with real power although there are 3/4 light clicks before the 'now I know' section.  This passage then has a couple of clicks at the start and then plays with great clarity and only a touch of minimal static here and there.  The end section then plays with stunning dynamic power and is a fabulous listen.  The acoustic lead in to 'Love Of My Life' does have some static/crackle and then plays very clearly with just the odd static sound.  The majority of it plays without interference but there is some 'background' here and there and a couple of crackles.  'Good Company' for the majority has audio of a very high standard but there is a little crackle in the middle section.  'Bohemian Rhapsody' has very little static on the opening verses and the audio is very impressive.  Indeed much of it plays with Near Mint quality the clarity is 'high end'.  The 'operatic/rock' sections then play with great power and no intrusive interference.  Absolutely stunning!  There is no distortion and even the quiet ending has wonderful clarity and only the one obvious crackle sound.  'God Save The Queen' ends this iconic album with no 'background' at all.  A superb ending.

The Gatefold

The embossed gatefold has only minor shelf wear.  The edges have hardly any rubbing and the wide spine remains 100% legible with only light spotting and a small mark at the bottom.  The corners are also very clean with only a small amount of wear.  The front cover is in lovely condition with only a little discolouration around the edges and it has retained its 'whiteness' extremely well.  The back cover does have a little more fading/discolouration and also has a small mark top left.  The inside of the gatefold is in great shape with only minor discolouration in a couple of areas.  The opening edge has no obvious handling wear.  A very acceptable copy of this iconic gatefold.

Picture inner

The inner, with the three cut corners, has a small split on the bottom edge that has been repaired with some cellotape.  The edges have no rubbing and the corners have only a tiny bit of wear.  There are only a couple of minor creases but overall this is a very clean inner.  A very high percentage of them have splits after all!

The labels

There is only a small amount of spindle wear and 4/5 mega faint spotting marks on the S1 label.  Very clean otherwise with no writing.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
