Rarity Factor: The album itself is far from rare, but so often the giant poster is missing, damaged or fully separated from the main cover. Also conditions of the packaging and playing conditions a factor. This copy has little to fault, and the giant poster is still FULLY attached to the cover, hence pristine and unmounted. These were attached by quite delicate perforations and fewer will remain fully connected. Many who bought this removed the poster to wall mount it, many were then torn, damaged, suffered fading or worse still, discarded. A complete, little-used and fully intact example of this excellent album is actually quite scarce these days.

Matrix Nos: YAX 5550-1U / YAX 5551-1U [RTB-2] and [RTB-1] is etched on to the run out grooves with ‘STIRLING’ credit on both sides.

Album Information: Another top quality album from one of the most collectable bands ever. Finding an original copy with the very large fold out poster still fully attached to the main cover is a tough ask. As stated above, this one is fully attached. Please note: I have covered over any small detail on the poster picture to comply with Ebay rules, of course the small black shapes are not present on the actual item. A complex and quite lavish package and one of the best Queen albums, for me the last truly great album they made before becoming too commercial for my taste. A lovely all-round copy that should please many collectors, sound quality and production values are immense, this well-pressed with little to fault.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with embossed word ‘JAZZ’ on front and back. This one includes the famous, daring, even spectacular near three foot girls on bikes poster that is fully attached to the cover. The main cover is matt and smooth (bar the embossed text areas), the poster has a more semi-gloss sheen, it has the UK G&L imprint. The set includes the original illustrated thick card inner that’s unlined and very glossy.

Cover Front: In terms of wear or creasing, barely any. Minor handling and surface traces with a tiny rub on the bottom right corner tip.

Cover Back: Very slight traces of grubbiness near the edges. Almost certain set-off from the black front side of others when packaged as few seem to avoid this as barest minimum. Little else to fault.

Cover Gatefold Inner & Poster: Easy – nothing to fault – the two inside main cover faces are as-made. The large poster the same, front and back. Still fully attached with NO perforation pulls, clearly unmounted e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks. Stating the obvious, still being attached, this was never displayed or wall hung, so this fragile poster is also like new as seen. Again: I have blacked out a tiny few of the more ‘sensitive’ areas to comply to Ebay rules. The small black rectangles are NOT present on the real thing.

Top Edges: Straight, flat, flush and barely worn at all.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same, but with a little light patchy rubbing to the front edge mostly towards the right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are superb.The front is the storage area, it being clean, sharp with barely any wear or thickening at all. The back edge is perilous and fragile – this is the poster perforated edge that attached it to the main cover. Again is practically perfect, fully intact with no weakening or perf-pulls. Few are seen like this now.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick, straight with barely any compression or rubbing. Folded square with the edges meeting up perfectly together and parallel. All the fine text present with no wear. This upright and untilted, any surface rubbing to the black surface minimal and small, a little near the ends.

Corners: A little rubbing only, excellent shape mostly retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Always nice see and offer one with the poster attached as-made. This should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: and with a very glossy finish and appearing laminated as the ends are very easily seen and distinct. This has to be seen – the stunning black glossy finish is simply incredible and looks hardly handled. This is a card unlined inner with the G&L (Garrod & Lofthouse) imprint. Wide top opening with pristine recessing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. A fantastic inner with no dulling and any creasing minimal.

Vinyl Condition: EXCELLENT(+): and this being somewhat critical. A very clean copy with fine shine and only very fine and faint surface traces seen under bright angled light. These hard card inners were never ‘record friendly’ and that is why most discerning buyers put their records straight into a replacement soft-lined inners for maximum protection – the owner of this did just that, so I kept and offer the Decca inner he used. I have seldom seen any record that included these type of hard card inners without some fine surface blemishes, even from new. No penetrating stylus scratches, purely wispy traces and this copy appears very little played and sounds superb, it will again please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear with no tracking issues* – sound quality is immense with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Most will know the supreme production standards of Queen, only mass-production sometimes letting them down. But this mostly sounds magnificent with any surface sound minimal – a gentle brief trace only towards the end of one song. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment, I doubt if this copy had been played much at all, that quite unusual for this very popular band. Barely anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful set. This more unusual, and collectable album will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
