The live recordings of most of the tracks included on the album (11 of the 15 tracks) are from the last and best-attended concert of the tour, with more than 120,000 people in attendance, which took place on August 9, 1986, at Knebworth Park near Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. It was not until long after the album's release that it was certain that this had been Freddie Mercury's very last live performance with Queen.
The other four songs on Live Magic are recordings from the concerts at Budapest's Népstadion and London's Wembley Stadium, respectively; in London Queen performed twice on consecutive days.
