Queen's second album was their first to really showcase just what they were capable of. With layers of guitars, beautifully considered orchestration, and of course, Freddie Mercury's phenomenal vocal performances, this is an album that is every bit as regal as the band's name suggests it should be. Amongst fans the album's reputation has grown in the half a decade since its original release, and rightly so. It may not contain any of the "classic Queen" that populates the best of compilations, but the sheer depth and artistry on display is quite breathtaking. With the album divided into black and white sides, there is a dichotomy that sits at the heart of the album. On one side, the band's more whimsical, romantic side plays out, whilst on the other, darker and more fantastical themes are explored. The album culminates with the band's breakthrough 'Seven Seas Of Rye', a song that fizzes with invention and energy. With the recording process apparently being somewhat tumultuous, you can almost hear the frustrations being unleashed in the song, before it concludes with jolly old knees up with "I do like to be beside the seaside'. This boxset comprehensively revisits the album with alternative takes, sessions, and live recordings. All of which point to the sheer scale of ambition that possessed the band whilst making what might just be their first masterpiece.
